Robert Ballou’s last lap, lap corner pass of Kyle Cummins in May’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway proved to be the closest finish of the USAC national season in 2024.
The 0.016 second margin recorded by Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) that night at the 1/2-mile dirt oval was the closest finish of the 82 feature events completed across USAC’s AMSOIL National Sprint, NOS Energy Drink National Midget and Silver Crown seasons in 2024.
Meanwhile, no driver had more 2024 USAC victories ranking inside the top-10 closest of the year than Justin Grant with three. The Ione, Calif. native scored USAC National Sprint Car wins by 0.247 seconds at Knoxville Raceway and 0.272 at Tri-State Speedway, and also captured a 0.427 USAC National Midget triumph by at Jefferson County Speedway.
USAC Sprint Car races ranked one-two-three in the category of closest finishes this year for 2024 and took seven of the top-10 overall slots.
The top-ranked tightest USAC National Midget showing of 2024 was Cannon McIntosh’s dramatic victory over Jade Avedisian and Chase McDermand during September’s Driven2SaveLives BC39 Presented By Avanti Windows & Doors at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
While no USAC Silver Crown races ranked within the top-10 of the closest finishes of the year, a pair of them did slot in just outside the top-10. The closest of the Silver Crown variety ranked 12th overall with Mitchel Moles prevailing by 0.489 seconds in September at Eldora. Ranking 13th overall was Daison Pursley’s last lap pass to score his first career USAC Silver Crown win in June at Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway.
On the flipside, Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.) earned the most lopsided victorious performance on USAC’s 2024 national calendar, finishing 17.850 seconds ahead of the field during May’s Hoosier Hundred at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
