VATTEROTT COLLEGE SILVER CROWN SHOWDOWN SATURDAY AT GATEWAY

VATTEROTT COLLEGE “SILVER CROWN SHOWDOWN” SATURDAY AT GATEWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK

St. Louis resident Chris Windom sees this Saturday’s USAC Silver Crown race at Gateway Motorsports Park as a big step toward what could be his first USAC National Championship.

Windom trails Kody Swanson by just 15 points entering this Saturday’s race, which offers 76 points. Just over a week ago, Windom won the most recent Silver Crown race, on the dirt, at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Windom has yet to finish outside the top-five in his four series starts in 2016.  Swanson, who is seeking a record third consecutive series title, has been on the podium in all four starts, including a victory in the “Hoosier Hundred” in May at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

Saturday’s Vatterott College “Silver Crown Showdown” will feature the fastest speeds of the year, with drivers eyeing Windom’s track record of 144.776 mph., set in 2013. The all-time series record (for traditional Silver Crown cars) is 146.212 mph set by Swanson at Iowa Speedway in 2012.

Tanner Swanson, Kody’s brother, has the only pavement victory so far this year. He won the “Carb Night Classic” at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind. May 27.

Bobby Santos has won the last two Silver Crown races at Gateway. The Swansons finished fifth (Kody) and ninth (Tanner) in 2014, while Kody was second to Santos in 2013. Windom won the pole and finished third in 2013 and was eighth the following year.

Saturday’s race, scheduled to start at 3:30 pm, will be 60 laps, 75 miles. The weekend at Gateway also features the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in the “Drivin’ for Linemen 200.”
