MAIN STREET ROUNDABOUT GROUNDBREAKING IN SPEEDWAY TODAY
The much-anticipated “Main Street Roundabout” became reality this morning during official groundbreaking near the main entrance to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Ind.
Industry and civic leaders on hand for the groundbreaking included Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles and USAC President Kevin Miller.
“We are indeed fortunate to have this spectacular community project at out doorstep, “says Miller. “USAC’s headquarters will occupy an important segment of the surroundings and as time progresses we have grandiose plans for a destination motorsports complex to serve the nation’s race fans as they experience the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its environs.”
The roundabout is expected to be completed in late-November, according to construction engineers and community planners. It will link the existing Crawfordsville Road to the northwest with Main Street to the south and 16th Street to the west, while Georgetown Road, which parallels the IMS front stretch, will stretch to just north of the roundabout but will not have access.
The roundabout, which planners say is expected to significantly reduce traffic incidents in the area, will enhance the already-expanding Main Street experience, which has fostered commercial expansion including motorsports business, restaurants and other amenities.
“We are truly excited to be at the focal point of this project,” added Miller. “We look forward to the future opportunities this presents for not only us but the entire community of Speedway.”
