SEASON REVIEW: THE DEMON HANGS 10 WITH USAC CRA SPRINT CARS IN 2022

Speedway, Indiana (December 12, 2022)………Damion Gardner, the undisputed king of AMSOIL USAC CRA Sprint Car racing, retained his throne once again in 2022.
This year, Gardner (Concord, Calif.) collected his 10th overall career series title and his ninth-in-a-row dating back to 2013.
“The Demon,” as he’s affectionately known, now possesses more career USAC championships than all but one driver, and that driver happens to be A.J. Foyt with 13.
Gardner led every statistical category with the division in 2022 on his way to a 236-point margin of victory in the final championship rundown over Austin Williams.
Meanwhile, Gardner also provided team owner Mark Alexander with his ninth consecutive entrant title and 10th overall with USAC CRA.
This year’s performance for Gardner featured six main event wins, which pushed his overall series win total to 95. His total USAC feature win count in all series pushed up to 106, which ranks seventh all-time.
Four of Gardner’s six feature wins on the 2022 season came in the first four events. He started the year off with a three-race sweep in January at Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway, then swung by victory lane in March’s return to California’s Perris Auto Speedway to capture the first four events of the campaign.
The Perris victory was his 50th in USAC CRA competition at the southern California half-mile dirt oval and tied his personal-best four-race USAC CRA win streak, which he also achieved in 2005 and 2014. Throughout the course, he added to more in the win column in April at Arizona’s Mohave Valley Raceway and once more for good measure in September at Perris.
Austin Williams (Yorba Linda, Calif.) posted his fourth-straight top-three result in the final CRA standings. It was his second time finishing as the runner-up, equaling his previous best of second in 2019. The 2009 series Rookie of the Year was unable to grab a feature victory but did score three second place results at Cocopah, California’s Thunderbowl Raceway and Mohave Valley.
Eddie Tafoya Jr. (Chino Hills, Calif.), likewise, was shut out of victory lane, but put in a career-best performance in multiple categories in 2022. His third place finish in the points topped his previous best mark and his second place result in the January finale at Cocopah was the best run yet of his CRA career. He was also one of only two drivers to start all 21 feature events in 2022 along with Damion Gardner.
Matt Mitchell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) earned his best points finish with CRA since 2014, taking fourth in the final rundown after garnering his first series feature victory in six seasons in April at Perris.
Tommy Malcolm (Corona, Calif.) slotted into the fifth spot in the point standings for the best points finish of his career, racking up five top-fives in 19 starts with a best showing of second at both Cocopah and Santa Maria as he gets ever closer to his first career series win.
In all, 12 drivers reached victory lane with USAC CRA this past season. Brody Roa (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored three times overall, including in back-to-back starts during a midsummer stretch at Perris and Santa Maria. He accomplished those two wins for two different teams – his own BR Motorsports No. 91R at Perris and the May Motorsports No. 8m at Santa Maria. He then traveled to Arizona in October to notch another win at Mohave Valley.
After an eight-year absence from USAC CRA victory lane, Cody Williams (Corona, Calif.) returned with a bang when he knocked down two-straight wins in May at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway, then again two weeks later in the 71st running of the Salute to Indy at Perris.
Austin Liggett (Tracy, Calif.) put up a “w” at California’s Keller Auto Speedway at Kings Fairgrounds in April. Ryan Bernal (Hollister, Calif.) notched his first USAC CRA win in four seasons during an April meet at Thunderbowl.
Tanner Boul (Auberry, Calif.) pulled a major upset in June at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway when he took his 360 c.i. engine to the win against the 410 c.i. dominated field. Charles Davis Jr. (Buckeye, Ariz.) showed who was in charge with a last lap pass to victory in August at Perris to post a win in back-to-back USAC CRA seasons for the first time since 2006-07.
Cocopah and Perris hosted a total of five matchups between USAC CRA and the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship during October and November. Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.) and Jake Swanson (Anaheim, Calif.) dominated each end of the 55th annual Western World Championships at Cocopah.
Days later at Perris, Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) collected an emotional victory on the opening night of the Oval Nationals just two days after his grandfather’s death. The following evening, Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) made his return to California for the first time in five years pay when was the victor on night two of the ovals. The final night and the $20,000 check belonged to Bacon as he became a first-time Oval Nationals champion.
Nate Schank (Santa Rosa, Calif.) earned 2022 USAC CRA Sprint Car Rookie of the Year honors after tallying an 11th place finish in the standings as well as three top-10 results, bested by a sixth in April at Keller Auto Speedway.
