Speedway, Indiana (December 9, 2024)………At the end of the 2023 season, Cade Lewis felt a major letdown after coming just 41 points shy of the USAC Avanti Windows & Doors Western States Midget championship.
Entering year two with car owner “Kiwi” Dean Alexander in 2024, the 17-year-old Lewis (Bakersfield, Calif.) was able to make the next step up from second to first to reach the top in his Wireless 101 – FK By SBS – Dogfish Tales – EBBCO/Spike/Speedway Toyota.
Armed with a pair of feature victories in June at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway and in September at Placerville (Calif.) Speedway, Lewis led the standings from start to finish, while also collecting two fast qualifying times, six top-five finishes and eight top-ten results in eight starts during the 2024 campaign.
The end result saw Lewis 11 points better than Edwards at season’s end, marking one of the closest title fights in series history, and the closest since Michael Faccinto and Alex Schutte tied at the top in 2018.
The difference this year was Lewis’ consistency and the ability to bounce back from misfortune. A July 6 barrel-roll at Placerville resulted in his lowest point of the season. The next time he returned to Placerville two months later, he won the thing.
“I finally put down some laps that were consistently fast and I could compete at the front,” Lewis stated. “We got two wins – I definitely wanted more – and the championship just topped it off, and that was pretty cool.”
Lewis’ route to the dirt tracks is certainly a different one. His father, Colby Lewis, was a Major League Baseball starting pitcher for 11 years, most notably with the Texas Rangers, before retiring in 2016 with 77 career victories. The life of a big leaguer can be a strain at times. In fact, Cade tells the story of his father being released by the Washington Nationals on the same exact day he was born in 2007.
While young Cade was once on a path toward baseball, before long, racing became his desire. Cade’s uncle had competed in super late models while his cousin raced at tracks such as nearby Bakersfield Speedway. Soon, Cade entered the trade. What started out as good old fashioned fun in machines such as a mini dwarf began to take on a more focused pursuit when Cade showed some serious talent.
By the time he was 13, the question became ‘what’s it going to be?’
“It expanded into something more and my dad was like, ‘well, he’s actually good at this, so let’s try and do it.” He put me into an outlaw kart while I was still playing baseball and still trying to figure out what I wanted to do.”
After outlaw karts, Cade moved into micro sprints, but with travel baseball’s rigorous summer slate, the schedule conflicts between the two disciplines made choosing between baseball and racing a challenge.
“It came down to ‘what do you want to do? Play baseball or race?’ It came to a point where I started choosing racing more often, and it’s stayed the same ever since.”
At age 15 in 2022, Cade ventured east to tackle the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget trail, spending the summer racing for Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports. Making 13 feature starts, Cade scored three heat race victories, a best feature finish of 8th at Kansas’ Solomon Valley Raceway and even led the first 12 laps of the main event at Missouri’s Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex.
Soon, Lewis traveled back west to California complete his high school studies and pursue motorsports a bit closer to home with the USAC Western States Midgets.
“Kiwi had his eyes on me to put me in his car but he wasn’t confident enough in my accomplishments yet,” Cade explained. “(Those performances) proved to him that I was good enough to compete back there. Last year, he made the decision to put me in his racecar and we decided to go chase a championship.”
Teaming up with Alexander, a longtime California-based racer and team owner originally from New Zealand, Lewis excelled in 2023, earning his first midget triumph at Merced Speedway en route to a runner-up finish in the standings. In 2024, they made it to the top to earn the first USAC championship for both Cade and “Kiwi” Alexander.
At this point, Lewis isn’t sure what his racing future holds. He does plan to attend college in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. following his 2025 high school graduation to pursue fabricating and welding. Regardless if he remains in the seat for the time being, Lewis assures that he plans to stay in the sport, whether it’s working and building on racecars or driving them.
Meanwhile, Drake Edwards (Peoria, Ariz.) put together a stellar freshman season to earn 2024 USAC Western States Midget Rookie of the Year honors. He tallied two victories, in June at Santa Maria Speedway and in October at The Dirt Track at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway. In the end, Edwards became the series’ first Arizonian Rookie of the Year since Connor Kassik in 2011.
On a part-time schedule, Caden Sarale (Stockton, Calif.) added two victories in May at Bakersfield Speedway and in July at Ventura Raceway. Two-time series champion Michael Faccinto (Hanford, Calif.) made his one start of the 2024 season pay off with a score in July at Placerville. Meanwhile, young Jett Yantis (Bakersfield, Calif.) was impressive in his first four career series appearances, winning in September at Ventura and recording a fast qualifying time in the finale at Kern.
Three Rookies finished inside the top-five of the standings with Edwards taking second, Dane Culver (Riverside, Calif.) placing third and Brandt Twitty (Bakersfield, Calif.) rounding out the top-five. C.J. Sarna (Palm Desert, Calif.) grabbed fourth in the final points for his second straight top-five result in the standings.
Prior to the July 20 feature at Ventura, a non-points special event pursuit race was held, consisting of separate segments totaling 20 laps in length. If a driver was passed in any of the segments, they were eliminated. Chase Johnson not only avoided elimination, but he thrived in his charge from 14th to the win.
