Located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California, the Spectator Gates will open at 5:00pm and racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" will start at7:00pm. Last Saturday night at SantaMaria, rookie contender Braden Chiaramonte led all 30-laps to score the firstUSAC/CRA win of his career over Kaleb Montgomery, Logan Williams, “TheCadillac” Cody Williams, and R.J. Johnson.
This Saturday’s show at PerrisAuto Speedway honors “Brother” Brett Taylor, who passed away at the age of 66earlier this year. “Brother Brett,” who was everyone’s friend in the pit area,was known throughout short track racing in Southern and Central California. Inaddition, he was a mainstay with a local Ventura County high school footballteam and the Police and Fire Departments in Ventura County.
Led by Perris and Ascot infieldannouncer Chris Holt, over $4,000 in purse money has been raised earlier thisweek for a special “Brother Brett Trophy Dash.” For the fastest four qualifiersthat accept the challenge, the event consists of four 3-lap rotating dasheswhere points are earned. In addition, an extra $1,000 will go to the winner ofthe 30-lap main event by Mike Grosswendt from All Coast Construction.
Since March 6, 2004, the LakePerris Fairgrounds has held 255 USAC/CRA Sprint Car events and forty-fivedifferent drivers have claimed victory. “The Demon” Damion Gardner leads allseries drivers with 51 “home track” wins and Matt Mitchell has won the February24th season opener and the May 25th“Salute to Indy.” David Gasper added his name to the record books on March16th, A.J. Bender joined the winner’s list on April 27th, and Tommy “Thunder”Malcolm topped the June 22nd and July 13th shows. Nic Faas set the 1-lap trackrecord of 15.833 on February 25, 2012 and the complete Perris USAC/CRA win listis at the end of this release.
Entering the twelfth point race,Tommy “Thunder” Malcolm (Yucaipa, California) holds a slim 5-point lead overthe competition. Racing Dino Napier’s #5X Indiana Truck Salvage / B&BPowder Coating DRC, Malcolm won Santa Maria’s second heat race and charged fromfourteenth to seventh in the main event. At press time, Tommy “Thunder” hasthree feature wins, one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, three heat racevictories, one In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award, ten top-10finishes, and 80 feature laps led in the campaign. Tommy is tied with “Chargin”Charles Davis Jr., Levi Jones, Bud Kaeding, “Bullet” Blake Miller, and JakeSwanson with six career triumphs and will be looking to continue his title runwith another win at Perris.
R.J. Johnson (Laveen, Arizona)heads to Perris ranked second in the USAC/CRA point standings. Driving Rickyand Michele Johnson’s #51 JUGO Superfoods / Avanti Windows & Doors Sherman,Johnson raced from ninth to fifth at Santa Maria. To date, the multi-timeArizona Sprint Car Champion and 2005 Rookie of the Year has one feature win,two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one semi-main win, ten top-10finishes, and 23 feature laps led on the season. R.J. is currently tied with“The People’s Champion” Dave Darland, “Super” Rickie Gaunt, Justin Grant, and“Showtime” Danny Sheridan with eight USAC/CRA wins and will have his sights theSaturday night victory.
After running third at SantaMaria, Logan Williams (Yorba Linda, California) has climbed to third in thechampionship chase. Piloting John McCarthy’s #5W Flowdynamics Incorporated /Drinkpak DRC, Williams has one heat race victory, one In Memory of Jim and ChetGardner Hard Charger Award, nine top-10 finishes, and 21 feature laps led tohis credit. Logan will be looking to score the first USAC/CRA victory of hiscareer at Perris Auto Speedway.
“The Big Game Hunter” AustinWilliams (Corona, California) sits fourth in the chase for the championship.Racing Tom & Christy Dunkel’s #17W Inland Rigging / Dunkel Farms DRC,Williams won Santa Maria’s third heat race and placed twenty-fourth after anearly flip ended his night. At press time, the 2009 Co-Rookie of the Year hasfour heat race victories, one In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard ChargerAward, seven top-10 finishes, and 11 feature laps led in the campaign. “The BigGame Hunter” is tied with Matt Mitchell with eleven series wins and will belooking for his first victory of the year on Saturday.
A.J. Bender (San Diego,California) ranks fifth in the USAC/CRA point standings. Driving the familyowned #21 Bender Pool & Spa / Matrix Construction Services DRC, Benderclaimed an eighth place finish at Santa Maria. To date, the 2022 USAC Western StatesMidget Rookie of the Year has one feature win, three heat race victories, seventop-10 finishes, and 21 feature laps led on the season. A.J. will have hissights on claiming the second USAC/CRA win of his career at the “Brother BrettClassic.”
