VENTURA, NEW CASTLE & DILLON HOSTS FOCUS RACES THIS WEEK

FERNS TAKES 2; POSEY, MULHEARN & CODY SWANSON ALSO WIN


USAC’s Midwest and California Dirt Ford Focus and Junior Focus series and the Carolina Ford Focus series are all in action this week, one of USAC’s busiest of the 2009 season.


 


Joe Liguori tops the Midwest standings as the series heads for Mount Lawn Speedway in New Castle, Ind. Wednesday night in conjunction with Regional and Kenyon Midget races. Brody Roa leads the California Dirt series to Ventura (Calif.) Raceway, where Kyle Edwards will lead the Junior Focuses and the Western Midgets join in for a “tripleheader.” Jeremy Frankoski is atop the Carolina series standings entering Saturday night’s race at Dillon (S.C.) Motor Speedway.


 


Kipp Posey of Lehi, Utah took the lead from Ron Duncombe on lap four and led the final 12 laps to win Saturday night’s 15-lap USAC Utah Ford Focus feature at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City.. Posey piloted the Triple effect/Catalyst Truss Wysong special to the win over Gregg Fuette, Michael Daniels, David Blomquist and Austin Luttmer. Chuck Groat was the fastest qualifier. The Utah series resumes at RMR June 6.


 


Cody Swanson of Norco, Calif. passed Brody Roa on the white-flag lap and went on to win Friday night’s 20-lap USAC California Dirt Ford Focus feature at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif. Roa, who led 17 laps of the race, finished second ahead of Sean Dodenhoff, Jake Swanson and Kevin Michnowicz. Nick Rossi led the opening lap of the race. Series point leader Nick Carlson was unable to compete at Watsonville due to an illness in his family.


 


Andrew Mulhearn of Whittier, Calif. led all 20 laps of Saturday night’s USAC California Dirt Ford Focus feature at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif. Sean Dodenhoff, Cody Swanson, Brody Roa and Nick Rossi trailed at the checkered flag. Wally Pankratz posted the fastest qualifying time.


 


Taylor Ferns of Shelby Township, Mich. scored a pair of USAC feature victories Friday and Saturday night at Watsonville and Hanford, Calif. She won Friday night’s 15-lap USAC California Junior Ford Focus feature at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville passing Andrew Murray on lap three, and led the rest of the way to beat Dennis Simunovich, Kyle Edwards and Murray. On Saturday, she led the final 14 laps of the 20-lap Junior Focus race at Kings Speedway. Piloting a Kruseman Enterprises entry, she passed Logan Williams on lap seven and led the rest of the way to beat fast qualifier Murray, Williams and Edwards.
