Speedway, Indiana (November 14, 2024)………R.J. Johnson’s championship mantle is chockfull of USAC championship trophies.
Between 2013-2017, Johnson (Laveen, Ariz.) collected five-straight USAC Southwest Sprint Car driving titles, and for much of his career, he’s also been a frequent regular and winner with the Avanti Windows & Doors USAC CRA Sprint Car Series each year since its inception in 2004.
But after 21 years with the series, the 37-year-old Johnson broke through to the top in 2024 as a USAC CRA champion on the strength of a pair of victories at California’s Dirt Track at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway in June and Santa Maria Speedway in September, to go along with a series-high 17 top-five and 21 top-ten results in 22 starts.
For much of the season, Johnson was involved in a see-saw, back-and-forth point battle with fellow series veteran Tommy Malcolm. However, after taking over the lead in late September, Johnson incrementally built his advantage with a string of consistency in which he finished inside the top-five in each of his final nine appearances to conclude the season. In fact, Johnson never finished worse than 11th all year long.
In the end, Johnson’s final tally was 185 points better than Malcolm as he earned his first career USAC CRA driving championship, and his sixth overall in USAC competition. Meanwhile, Ricky and Michele Johnson earned their first USAC CRA entrant crown as the owners of R.J.’s JUGO Superfoods / Avanti Windows & Doors sponsored Sherman chassis powered by a Pro Flyer Chevy.
Johnson’s route to a title is quite extensive. Hailing from Arizona, he regularly made the long northbound treks to California to compete with the series which consists of a majority of California drivers and California venues. Undaunted, Johnson’s commitment paid off in a big way.
“It takes a lot to do this,” Johnson explained. “When you’re from Arizona, it’s a lot of traveling and you lose every weekend. It’s not just one day. We’ve got to leave Friday, we race Saturday and drive home Sunday.”
On the same note, Johnson became the first native Arizonian to capture the USAC CRA championship and is also the first former series Rookie of the Year to vault his way to the series title. Johnson was USAC CRA’s top Rookie in 2005.
Tommy Malcolm (Corona, Calif.) finished as the runner-up in series points for the second consecutive year. He led the series in feature wins with four during the 2024 campaign, including a run of three-straight in midsummer at California’s Perris Auto Speedway twice, sandwiched around a Santa Maria score. Malcolm pocketed win number four in August at Kern Raceway.
In part-time duty with the series, Ricky Lewis (Camarillo, Calif.) notched three wins within a single month late in the season at Arizona’s Mohave Valley Raceway, plus a pair in California at Imperial Valley Raceway and in the season finale at Perris.
Series veterans more than held their own on the trail in 2024. Charles Davis Jr. (Buckeye, Ariz.) owned a pair of wins in a rain-shortened March show at Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway and once more in September at Perris.
Meanwhile, Matt Mitchell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) posted two early season triumphs, including the season opener at Perris in February where he swept the night as the fastest qualifier, then went on to win his heat race and the feature. In late May, he returned to the PAS to grab his third career win at the Salute to Indy.
When he wasn’t on the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship tour, Kevin Thomas Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) stopped by with the series and wheeled the Bonneau Motorsports machine to its first two career series victories, both at Mohave Valley, in April and again during November’s Western World Championships opener.
Cody Williams (Norco, Calif.) led all drivers in the series in Woodland Auto Display Fast Qualifying times for the second consecutive season. The five-time quick timer raced to victory lane twice as well, scoring a last lap win over A.J. Bender in August at Perris, and then used a borrowed engine from fellow competitor Verne Sweeney to win at Kern Raceway on the final weekend in September.
Four first time USAC CRA winners emerged during the 2024 season. David Gasper (Goleta, Calif.) was named the series Rookie of the Year following a fifth place finish in the standings, plus his first two career series victories at Perris in March and at Imperial Valley in October.
In what was his 119th career series start, A.J. Bender (San Diego, Calif.) finally broke through as a USAC CRA Sprint Car winner in April at Perris. Bender also led all drivers with seven heat race wins.
Furthermore, Braden Chiaramonte (El Cajon, Calif.) went wire-to-wire for his first win in August at Santa Maria. USAC National Sprint Car regular Kyle Cummins (Princeton, Ind.) tallied his initial USAC CRA win in the 57th Western World Championships finale in November at Mohave Valley.
In that same event at Mohave Valley, USAC Triple Crown champion J.J. Yeley (Phoenix, Ariz.) made the biggest feature charge with the series during the year after advancing from 18th to 5th.
Eighty-one (81) different drivers made a feature start during the 2023 season with A.J. Bender, David Gasper, R.J. Johnson, Tommy Malcolm, Verne Sweeney (Lomita, Calif.) and Austin Williams (Yorba Linda, Calif.) making feature starts in all 22 events.
