1973 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: RICE-A-RONI, THE USAC TREAT
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
One year after helping the Shannon Brothers team to a USAC National Midget entrant championship, it was Larry Rice’s turn to enjoy the spotlight as the 26-year-old Linden, Ind. native won a driving championship of his own in 1973.
Rice’s journey to racing stardom entailed a slightly unusual path. Earning his education degree at Indiana’s Ball State University, Rice became a molder of minds as an elementary school teacher by day. By night, Rice was pursuing his master’s degree in mastering the racetracks across the United States as a rising star on the USAC National Midget circuit.
Rice captured the 1973 crown by combining consistency with three feature wins to take the title by 30 points over Tommy Astone. Rice finished inside the top-ten 35 times in 44 races and drove for eight different car owners: Gene Willman, Dan Pool, Bob Hanson, Dick Polnau, George Gamester, Chuck Mauro, Howard Linne and, finally, the Shannon Brothers.
Rice also became the first driver to win the USAC National Midget championship and promote a series event in the same season. He served as the race organizer for the May 18 event at Henry’s Speedway in Oxford, Ind., a race won by first-time series winner Billy Shuman while Rice, himself, finished second in his own event.
Doug Caruthers, hailing from Anaheim, Calif. won the entrant title with the No. 11 Sesco chauffeured by Astone. Washington’s Mike Gregg was named Rookie of the Year after finishing sixth in the standings while also becoming a first-time series winner. Third-place points finisher Bobby Olivero of Lakewood, Calif. won six features for car owner L.T. Caruthers in the first ever Volkswagen-powered car with the series, earning Olivero Most Improved Driver status. Car owner/constructor/mechanic Bob Higman was the recipient of the Jim Blunk Award for Sportsmanship.
Veteran driver Chuck Arnold hung up his helmet as a driver and began serving USAC during 1973 as referee for the Midget division. The 1954 NASCAR National Midget champion won 14 USAC National Midget features between 1966-1971.
In March at Arizona’s Manzanita Speedway, the Doug Caruthers owned-car driven by Jimmy Caruthers sported a Tommy Lee Power Steering unit for the first time – the first Midget to have power steering. Caruthers finished 10th in the feature.
Early morning phone calls annoy most people, Johnny Parsons included. However, a 1:30am ring on January 7 paid off. That was the hour that car owner Richard Heerboth had Gary Bettenhausen call J.P. in hopes of getting Parsons to drive Heerboth's Chevy II indoors in Fort Wayne, Ind. When regular driver Dennis Dorsey was hospitalized with pneumonia, Parsons accepted the ride, and the rest is history. It was Parsons’ first win since 1971 and Heerboth's first ever.
Larry Dickson won a 100-lapper at Fort Wayne in January, which came as a surprise when leader Mel Kenyon spun in oil in turn four on the last lap. Kenyon kept his foot in it, did a “360,” and still finished second to win the Indoor Midget title.
Merle Bettenhausen made his comeback to the series on June 16 at Kentucky’s Lost Creek Speedway, his first appearance in a racecar since his 1972 USAC National Championship accident at Michigan International Speedway, which dismembered his right arm. In August of 1973, at Tennessee’s Sportsman Speedway, he swung to the outside of Billy Engelhart on the final turn to win by inches, driving the final 37 laps of the 40-lapper without the aid of the power steering.
Famed engine builder Fred Offenhauser, the namesake of the division for several years in the 1960s (Offy 110), and whose engines had dominated the sport decades, passed away in his sleep at his home on August 17. He was 85 years old.
Billy Engelhart played the tortoise role for 99 laps behind the hare, Tommy Astone, and moved to the inside on the final turn to sweep across the finish line first to win a thrilling Hut 100 in September at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
The USAC board instituted a new point system which eliminated decimal and fractional points. History was made on September 30 when two USAC Midget races were held on the same day in different cities incorporating the same field of entrants during the day at Park City, Kansas’ 81 Speedway and at night at Olympic Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
Arizona’s FasTrack International Speedway hosted midgets for the first time in November and was highlighted by the entry of several radical designs, including rear-engine machines. Lee Kunzman turned a 31.43 second lap to set a new world record for a midget on a one-mile track. Kunzman was in a brand-new Don Edmunds-built Offy roadster owned by Howard Linne. His car was withdrawn, however, due to a protest filed regarding the wing-like shape on the nose of the car.
