1962 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: A BITTERSWEET THREE-PEAT FOR DAVIES
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
In what seems like a cruel twist of fate, the 1962 USAC National Midget season witnessed both the emergence of its second ever three-peat champion and the loss of its first triple champion all within the span of four months, which cast a bittersweet pall over the happenings in the series’ seventh year of competition.
Jimmy Davies’ tenacity and grit found no quit in 1962 and, consequently, he chalked up enough points to win the USAC National Midget driving championship for the third straight year after previously placing at the top in both 1960 and 1961.
The Glendale, Calif. native who made his home in Monticello, Ind. during the season became the second driver to achieve the feat of three-straight USAC National Midget titles, repeating Shorty Templeman accomplishment from 1956-57-58.
One of the most devastating accidents in series history resulted in a double fatality on August 23 at the Marion Fairgrounds in Ohio. Templeman of Seattle, Wash. and Jim Hemmings of North Vernon, Ind. were both killed on the second lap of the feature which sent Templeman flipping multiple times while Hemmings was ejected from his car. Templeman had just been cleared to return to racing two weeks earlier after missing the previous two months due to an accident in June.
Missouri’s Bob Wente edged closer to becoming a championship contender as he finished a close second just 58 points behind Davies in the 62-race season, which accounted for a $7,031 point fund distributed as a bonus to the top-12 drivers. There were 1,100 miles of feature midget events during the year, paying $137,850. The drivers were running for an average of $2,223 per race, which amounted to $125 per feature mile.
Davies won nine feature races, finished second in six of them and third in seven and established a series record that very well may never be touched with a remarkable 25 fast qualifying times during the season.
Wente took the checkered flag on eight occasions placed second in eight and third in seven. Tommy Copp finished the season in third place, moving up two positions from his 1961 showing of fifth.
The season included remarkable driving by Allen Crowe of Springfield, Ill., who was forced out of action in September due to an accident in a USAC National Championship race and still managed to finish eighth in the standings.
Chuck Weyant of Springfield, Ill. blasted his way to a feature win on March 24 as he captured the 100-lap midget event at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Ill. Wild enthusiasm reigned as more than 15,000 crowded into their seats to observe the season’s final indoor midget competition.
Drewry’s Ltd. Awarded a specially designed Omega wristwatch to the 1962 USAC National Midget champion. Drewry’s Red Marley and his firm also presented trophies at many of the Midwest USAC events during the season at tracks like Soldier Field, Terre Haute, South Bend, Illiana, Raceway Park and the Indianapolis Speedrome. Marley owned cars won four USAC National Midget feature events between 1956 and 1958 with Gene Hartley as his driver.
For the second consecutive season, Kenosha, Wis. car owner/driver Harry Turner ran afoul of USAC officials and was promptly suspended indefinitely from USAC competition for participating in a non-sanctioned event without approval and under an assumed name. At the time of the suspension in early July, Turner's midgets were both in the top-ten of the entrant point standings. Furthermore, driver Harold "Willie" Wildhaber, who had joined USAC just three weeks earlier, was also suspended in early July for participating in a non-sanctioned event without approval.
Billy Cantrell of Anaheim, Calif. lapped the entire field en route to a 150-lap Turkey Night Grand Prix victory at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. Cantrell had some nervous moments when his fuel supply was nearly depleted at lap 140. His car sputtered and slowed drastically for the remaining 10 laps, but his lead was enough to remain ahead of Johnny Moorhouse.
The wide array of engines utilized by USAC Midget teams in 1962 was an eclectic variety, which included Offenhauser, Volvo, Oldsmobile F-85, Buick Studebaker, Tempest, Ford V-8 and Falcon powerplants. A special six-cylinder engine known as a Willison powered one car and Ferguson Tractor engines were still being used by several car owners.
Also worth noting is that 1962 marked the initial USAC National Midget feature win by the series’ winningest all-time driver, Mel Kenyon, who scored the first of his 111 victories in a 25-lapper at Springfield (Ill.) Speedway on June 11.
