THE USAC SPRINT LEADERBOARD: JULY 8, 2022

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Brandon, South Dakota (July 8, 2022)………At the same time, so much has changed, yet so much remains the same at the top of USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship racing entering this weekend’s Huset’s Speedway USAC Nationals in Brandon, S.D. on July 8-9-10.

Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) and TOPP Motorsports (Rochester, Ind.) remain the point leaders of the driver and entrant standings, respectively, by a season-high 46-point margin over Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Dynamics, Inc. (Milford, Ohio).  Grant is seeking his first series title while Bacon is aiming for his fifth, all for Dynamics/Hoffman.

Meanwhile, six drivers have shared victory lane thus far through 16 events, and all of them are already multi-time winners!  Bacon leads the way with four while Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) and Grant possess three each.  C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) owns a pair of wins as does Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.) and leading Rookie of the Year contender Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.) at fifth overall in the standings.

Bacon leads most of the major statistical categories with 128 laps led, eight heat race victories and 11 top-fives while Grant has posted a season-leading 15 top-tens in just 16 starts.

Leary has racked up a staggering seven fast qualifying times through 16 events, nearly halfway to the all-time mark of 15 set by Kevin Thomas Jr. in 2018.

Six individuals have qualified for all 16 events thus far: Axsom, Bacon, Ballou, Grant, Leary and Seavey.

Alex Bright (Collegeville, Pa.) remains the leader of the biggest single-race charge of the season, blasting from 16th to 2nd in June at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway.

ADDING TO THE BOOK:

Grant’s third series triumph of the season on July 2 at Putnamville, Indiana’s Lincoln Park Speedway was his 31st overall in USAC National Sprint Car competition, moving him past Chris Windom and into a tie for 16th all-time alongside Tyler Courtney on the all-time list.

Utilizing the Midwest Sprint Car Series format of group qualifying on July 1 at Lincoln Park, Ryan Thomas (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded his first career USAC National Sprint Car Fatheadz Fast Qualifying award of his career, besting a field of 58 cars.

By the way, the 58 cars on hand that night were the most for a USAC National Sprint Car event since the Western World Championships of 2008 at the defunct Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz.

Leary gained his second USAC National Sprint Car feature win of the season on July 1, which was also the 18th of his career, moving him past Jerry Coons Jr., Jim Hurtubise and Bud Kaeding for 33rd on the all-time list.

UP NEXT:

For the first two nights of racing at Huset’s on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9, pit gates open at Noon Central.  The front gates will open at 3pm with the drivers meeting at 4pm, an autograph session from 5-5:30 behind the grandstands, engine heat at 6:30pm and hot laps at 7pm followed by qualifying and racing action.

On the final night, championship night, Sunday, July 10, pit gates open at Noon Central.  The front gates will open at 3pm with the drivers meeting at 4:15pm, cars on track for engine heat at 5pm and hot laps at 6pm.
