I was stunned when I heard that only 6 sprint cars were registered for the Joe James/Pat O'Connor memorial at the Salem Speedway.  The car count was so low, that the USAC Sprints were replaced by the XSTREME Series Winged Sprint Cars.  I would rather seen Salem cancel the even rather than the winged sprints competing in that prestigious event.  So I ask this question:  What is the status of USAC's Sprint Series and why were there so few cars to register?
