Tires: sipering and grooving

What is the general school of thought on sipering and grooving tires? How are they beneficial to the car's performance? Is one better than the other?

From what I understand, grooving is used for forward or side bite while siping is used to prevent harder compound tires from sealing over. Siping, I think, also allows the tires to generate heat more quickly. I've seen lots of grooving, but not really siping. We race asphalt, so maybe siping is more prevalent with dirt track?

I have only seen and siped my tires for dirt, makes the tires genereate heat quicker or indoor races because the temp is 0-20 degrees.  ;-)
