Title: First Responder
Post by: pointtwofive on January 12, 2009, 04:54:31 PM
Our club had a meeting last Sat. and one of the items of discussion was the fact that we previously had the “luxury” of having two members who attended all club races and were fireman. This year they are moving on to 600’s and we are faced with having no EMT’s. We are talking to the EMT’s about putting together some hands on first responder training for the members. I was wondering how other clubs have dealt with this situation, so as maybe we don’t reinvent the wheel here. Any comments, suggestions or ideas would be appreciated?

I'm a firefighter but not a first responder also a saftey dir. One suggestion is to ask your local ambulance company if they would like to send a on duty crew to sit at your event. They might ask for a fee or they might say that if they get a priority call they may have to leave and return to stage at your event. You might be looking at a liability problem if your members do not have a first responder liecence. You also might have the hands on be how to stablize the driver til the EMT crew arrives.

Thanks for the input Jeff. We will definitely look into the ambulance company idea. As far as first responder training, we were not looking at getting anyone certified, but to teach folks how to stabilize the driver before up righting a car, how to calm the driver and determining their condition. Also, as you stated, how to stabilize the driver till EMT's arrive. As far as liability goes, there is always the "Good Samaritan Law".
Anyone else have ideas or input?

You can call  the local hospital and see about them doing a training session on first aid.  A lot of times they will do this for a small fee.
