STAT BOOK: USAC AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT CARS – INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND EDITION

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Speedway, Indiana (June 28, 2020)………A busy week with three USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car races lie ahead on this Independence Day Week for the series with traditional Indiana stops at the Terre Haute Action Track on Wednesday, July 1 and a doubleheader weekend at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind. on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, both of which are co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series.

Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) has reigned supreme in three of the last four USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car events at Iowa’s 34 Raceway, Missouri’s Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 and Indiana’s Plymouth Speedway, all in the month of June.  By doing so, he became the first driver since Kevin Thomas Jr. in 2013 to win three of the first six races to open a USAC National Sprint Car season.  He is also the first since himself at the end of 2018 to win three of four races at any point during the USAC National Sprint season.

Grant became the first three-time winner in the series in 2020, with Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) also capturing a pair and Stephen Schnapf (Evansville, Ind.) winning once.  Grant’s 19th career series victory moved him to within two wins of 1967 USAC National Sprint Car champ Greg Weld for 29th on the all-time list at 21.

Furthermore, Grant led the final 28 laps of last Friday’s Plymouth race, extending his lead in that category to 87 laps led with the series this season.  That’s 57 more than the driver with the second-most, Schnapf.

C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) snagged another Fatheadz Fast Qualifier award at Plymouth Speedway last Friday to become the first multi-time fast qualifier with the series this year.  For Leary, the defending series champ, it was his 25th career USAC National Sprint Car fast qualifying time, moving him past Gary Bettenhausen, Justin Grant and J.J. Yeley for 15th on the all-time series list.

Tanner Thorson (Minden, Nev.) had a spectacular second-place finish in his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car start last Friday at Plymouth.  The 2016 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget champion was behind the wheel of the Reinbold-Underwood Motorsports No. 19AZ, subbing for 2018 Midget champ Logan Seavey, who sat out the Plymouth race following his Indiana Midget Week crash at Lincoln Park Speedway on June 18.

Thorson’s second place run was historic as it was the first time since Tanner Swanson in 2008 that a driver had finished inside the top-two in his USAC National Sprint Car debut.  Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.) won that race at Indiana’s Anderson Speedway 12 years ago.

Chase Stockon (Fort Branch, Ind.) made history at Plymouth, becoming the first driver to reach 300 consecutive USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature starts, a remarkable record that has spanned every series race since the beginning of the 2012 season.

Both Brady Bacon and Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) had rough nights at Plymouth after their involvement in an early race accident in which Bacon flipped and Windom slid to a stop with damage on the left front.  Both drivers miraculously returned to the event following quick work by their crews with Bacon driving back to 9th and Windom to 11th.  While Bacon maintained a streak of finishing all six races in 2020 within the top-ten, for Windom, Plymouth marked his first finish outside the top-six all season, let alone the top-ten.

For sixth-place Plymouth finisher Kevin Thomas Jr. (Cullman, Ala.), it was his fifth consecutive top-ten finish with the series, second behind only Grant and Bacon who have six consecutive.  Carson Short (Marion, Ill.) has also finished within the top-ten in all but one of the six races run thus far with a 7th at Plymouth.

Meanwhile, Anton Hernandez (Arlington, TX) opened up his already commanding lead in the Rookie standings with a semi-feature win and 10th place result at Plymouth, his third top-ten in six series starts.  He leads Chris Phillips (Plainfield, Ind.) by 117 points in the Rookie race.

Wednesday at Terre Haute, pits open at 3pm Eastern, grandstands at 4pm and hot laps at 6:30pm.  Adult grandstand tickets are $25 while children age 11 and under are free.  Adult infield tickets are just $15.  Pit passes for members are $30 for members and $35 for non-members.  The Scott's Custom Colors DIRTcar Modifieds are also on agenda for the evening.

For the Bill Gardner Sprintacular at Lincoln Park Speedway, on Friday, adult general admission tickets are $25 with pit admission $30.  The pits open at 3pm ET with the front gate opening at 4:30pm and hot laps at 6:30pm.  Modifieds, Super Stocks and Bombers are also racing in the event.

On Saturday at Lincoln Park, adult general admission tickets are $25 with pit admission $35.  The pits open at 3pm ET with the front gate opening at 4:30pm and hot laps at 6pm.  The USAC Midwest Regional Midgets join the USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midgets and Race Savers 305 Winged Sprints on the event card.

Tickets are on sale for all three of these events now, exclusively at www.usactickets.com.

All these events can be seen LIVE exclusively on FloRacing.
