A LOOK BACK: 1990 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON
Steve Butler of Kokomo, Ind. became the first four-time champion in USAC Sprint Car history in 1990, winning the Loctite/Crestliner Vans championship in convincing fashion. He finished the season in the Dynamics, Inc./Hoffman Auto Racing machine after driving the Aristocrat Products Racing Team machine the first half of the campaign.
Butler led the standings most of the season, scoring a pair of wins in Missouri and at Winchester. His first Winchester triumph was broadcast nationally by ESPN, which aired several series events during the year.
The 1990 season was a tremendous success as the expanded schedule of events included both paved and dirt tracks, winged and non-winged races.
The tragic fatal crash of two-time Sprint Car champion Rich Vogler at Salem in July cast a shadow over the entire year, but the memories he gave us all will be cherished forever. It seems somehow fitting that his final race is included in his victory column.
Jack Hewitt’s eight feature wins were tops among series competitors and he strung together three-straight in July. His wins included the $10,000-to-win “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora and he was the only driver to win with and without a wing.
The Gordons, Eric and Jeff, made their mark in 1990, Eric scoring two big wins on his way to the runner-up point spot and Jeff starring in the televised events. A high point for Eric was the May 13 IRP race, where he was presented his winner’s trophy by none other than A.J. Foyt.
Greg Staab was a consistent performer and wound up third in the final points while newcomer Rick Howerton was spectacular in his drive to fourth in the standings.
First-time USAC Sprint winners included 1989 USAC Midget champ Russ Gamester in his first-ever Sprint start at Kokomo and veteran Bob Cicconi at I-44.
Butler clinched the title in great style, winning the main event at the Winchester high-banks in October.
