A LOOK BACK: 2000 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON
Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. outlasted Jay Drake to win the 2000 USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car championship, his second series title, despite the fact that Drake won 10 times!
The lack of an early-season pavement ride hurt Drake’s chances at the crown, but he came within 24 points of catching Elliott in the final event.
Elliott was one of 11 different race winners in 29-race series conducted on 16 different tracks. His wins came in the Danny Milburn Classic at Lawrenceburg, Ind., and at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Except for early-season leads by Drake and Derek Davidson and a brief one-race lead for Drake in late-August, Elliott led the standings most of the year.
Drake’s victories included four in the Pennzoil “Indiana Sprint Week” series as he swept to that title. He won the “Tony Hulman Classic” and the $17,000-to-win Terre Haute Nationals, both in Terre Haute, Ind.
Other starts during the campaign were Tracy Hines, who swept the final three races on the calendar, including the “4-Crown Nationals” and “Sammy Sessions Memorial” as well as a record-setting sixth victory at Indianapolis Raceway Park; Eric Gordon, who took the inaugural “Glen Niebel Classic” at Anderson, Ind. and the 50-lap “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” at Salem, Ind.; Brian Tyler, who secured a fourth “Border Wars” title in six years; and Dave Darland, who scored victories at Toledo, Hawkeye Downs and Eldora. His Toledo win earned him an IRL test with the Hemelgarn Racing team.
Western Sprint Car champion Bud Kaeding also scored his initial National win in the Pennzoil “Indiana Sprint Week” opener at North Vernon and was named the True Value “Rookie of the Year,” while Brandon Petty was named “Most Improved Driver” after taking 12th in the final standings.
Rusty McClure was seriously injured in a crash at Eldora in April, but had made a dramatic recovery by late season, while Todd Kane escaped injury in a flip at Terre Haute after breaking the track qualifying record there.
Series participants were saddened to learn of the death of former series coordinator Gary Sokola late in the season.

The "Terre Haute National Open ", America's biggest non-wing Sprint Car race, with a posted purse of over $96,000, will now conclude Saturday with a complete preliminary program prior to the already-scheduled five feature events, culminating with a 40-lap race offering $17,000 to win.
Gates at the Terre Haute Action Track Saturday will open at 12 noon, with practice at 4 pm, qualifying at 4:30 and racing at 5:30.
