JONES LEADS SPRINT CARS TO TERRE HAUTE SATURDAY

SWINDELL, SPENCER SHARE “VERMEIL CLASSIC” GLORY

The First Financial Bank Sprint Car Classic is scheduled this Saturday at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track as the battle for the USAC National Sprint Car Championship continues. Levi Jones of Avon, Ind. has a 40-point lead over Dave Darland entering Saturday’s program, during which a total of 74 points are available.

Jones and Darland are both multiple race winners at the half-mile Indiana oval. Jones has won five Sprint races there while Darland has won in all three USAC National racing series at the historic oval. Jones won this year’s “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Action Track, while Brad Sweet was the winner of the “Indiana Sprint Week” feature in July.

Defending Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif. won Sunday night’s 30-lap “Louie Vermeil Classic” Sprint race at Calistoga Speedway. He grabbed the lead on lap 26 and led the final five laps in his Grubstake Storage/Madera Produce Maxim/Shaver. Saturday night’s feature winner, Kevin Swindell, finished second, followed by Josh Ford, Danny Sheridan and Shane Golobic. Swindell led the first six laps and Hockett led the next 19. USAC/CRA point leader David Cardey finished 10th.

Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn., passed Matt Mitchell on lap 24 and led the final seven laps to win Saturday night’s 30-lap “Louie Vermeil Classic” at Calistoga. Mitchell finished second behind’s Swindell’s Roth Racing special, with Blake Miller, Bobby McMahan and Cardey rounding out the “top-five” at the checkered flag. Miller set a new track record during qualifying. Danny Sheridan led the first 12 laps and Mitchell the next 11 before Swindell took over.
