STAT BOOK: USAC SPRINT POINTS RACE, TEMPS, HEAT UP HEADED TO SMACKDOWN

Speedway, Indiana (July 20, 2021)………Nose to the grindstone, nights of little sleep and truckin’ down the highway through the middle of the night has been the way of life for anybody involved in USAC racing throughout the summer.
It’s been non-stop and on-the-gas, with little time to tap the brakes and smell the roses, or methanol, in this case.
Now we look up, and before we even knew it, summer has almost drawn to a close and the final week of August has arrived with the heat, and the competition, turned up to the max.
Once again, in the latter part of August, three spectacular nights of USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship racing events at Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway quench our thirst and fill our cups of everything about this sport we love.
It’s all headed to the quarter-mile dirt oval this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 26-27-28, for Elliott’s Custom Trailers & Carts Smackdown X.
As he has since April 3 at Lawrenceburg, Brady Bacon continues to lead the series point standings in his Dynamics, Inc. No. 69. However, the points race is now the closest it’s been since June 17 at Selinsgrove when Bacon held a 29-point lead over Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.). At the time, Kevin Thomas Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) was 93 points back in third.
As it stands now, Thomas Jr. has closed Bacon’s lead to just 39 after his recent Indiana Sprint Week title run and his victory last Sunday night at Paragon (Ind.) Speedway. Thomas has now enjoyed 16 consecutive top-ten results and has finished inside the top-five in 11 of the last 13 features.
Thomas and Grant are equaled for the most series wins this season at five apiece. Grant possesses the most laps led this year with 149 in totality. Thomas also leads in most fast qualifying times with six.
Bacon’s consistency has positioned him as the championship leader in pursuit of a fourth career series crown. His 23 top-fives and 25 top-tens in 27 starts have placed him atop the standings for all but two races this year.
Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) has consistently racked up heat race victories this season with 12 over the course of the year, four more than his closest competition.
Tanner Thorson (Minden, Nev.) continues to own the Rookie of the Year race. He sits fifth in overall points and is trying to become the first series Rookie to finish inside the top-five of the USAC National Sprint Car standings since Josh Ford in 2004.
Only seven series Rookies have ever finished that high up in the USAC National Sprint Car points: Eric Gordon (2nd in 1989), Danny Milburn (3rd in 1982), Johnny Coogan (4th in 1981), Terry Shepherd (4th in 1985), Rick Howerton (4th in 1990), J.J. Yeley (5th in 1997) and Ford (5th in 2004).
Eight drivers have started all 27 features contested thus far: Brady Bacon, Robert Ballou, Justin Grant, Kevin Thomas Jr., Tanner Thorson, C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.), Jake Swanson (Anaheim, Calif.) and Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.).
The biggest movers of the year have all advanced 14 positions during a single feature race: Alex Bright went 18th to 4th at Path Valley Speedway Park (Spring Run, Pa.) in April; Leary traveled 21st to 7th in June at Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg Fair Speedway; Bacon charged from 22nd to 8th in July at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
On Thursday and Friday at Kokomo, the pits open at 3pm Eastern, grandstands open at 3pm, driver’s meeting at 6pm and hot laps at 6:30pm, with qualifying and racing immediately following. General admission tickets are $30, kids 12 and under are free.
On Saturday at Kokomo, the pits open at 3pm Eastern, grandstands open at 3pm, driver’s meeting at 5:30pm and hot laps at 6pm, with racing immediately following. General admission tickets are $35, kids 12 and under are free. USAC Midwest Regional Midgets will also be on hand.
Reserved seating, three-day passes can be purchased on race night for $95.
