2007 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW: KAEDING REPEATS

In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

2007 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW: KAEDING REPEATS

Good things come in pairs, so they say.

A second consecutive USAC Silver Crown driving championship in 2007 made Bud Kaeding the third consecutive driver to win two-straight titles with the series, following in the steps of J.J Yeley (2002-03), Dave Steele (2004-05).

Overall, Kaeding is the fourth to earn back-to-back titles with the series, the first being Jack Hewitt in 1986-87, the very same Hewitt who once babysat a young Kaeding as a child.

Kaeding never won during the season, becoming the first driver since Tony Stewart in 1995 to do so and win the Silver Crown championship in the same year.  Furthermore, Kaeding didn’t lead a single lap on the 13-race schedule, yet consistency led him to his 38-point final margin over Wayne Reutimann Jr.

For much of the season, Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. was mired around third to fourth in points as five different drivers led the standings in the first five races of the season: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Tracy Hines, Paul White, Aaron Pierce and Reutimann.

Olive Branch, Mississippi’s Stenhouse led off the campaign by winning his first career USAC Silver Crown event in just his sixth career series start at the Copper on Dirt at Manzanita Speedway in Arizona in February.

Hines of New Castle, Ind. brought car owner A.J. Foyt back to victory lane by controlling the final four laps of the first pavement event of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March.

It was the same car, different driver taking the glory on the Iowa hardtop in early May with Brownsburg, Indiana’s Bobby East’s domination in the No. 14 for four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and 1972 Silver Crown titlist Foyt.

Pierce of Muncie, Ind. captured the victory in a thrilling debut at South Carolina’s Darlington Raceway in May while Parma, Michigan’s Brian Tyler earned his lone victory of the season at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway in June one year after winning in a sprint car at the very same ¾-mile paved tri-oval.

Reutimann surged to the point lead at the Richmond stop and stood atop the standings longer than anybody not named Bud Kaeding during the season.

The Foyt car continued its prowess of the pavement at Chicagoland Speedway in July with its merry-go-round of star drivers stepping in and producing immediate results, with Yeley leading every lap in winning his 13th career Silver Crown race following capturing his 13th career series pole, all of which occurred on, wait for it, Friday the 13th.

The Foyt team delivered a 1-2 sweep in August at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind. with East leading wire-to-wire over teammate Chilean Pablo Donoso, who finished in the runner-up spot.

A steady Bud Kaeding, who hadn’t finished better than fourth in the first seven races, stepped to the top of the heap to take the championship point lead following his best run of the year, a third-place finish in mid-August at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, a time-shortened event won by Stenhouse.

Shane Cottle of Kokomo, Ind. was the next in line to corral a first career Silver Crown victory in an impressive performance under the lights on the Magic Mile of the Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds where Kaeding once again finished third.

Yeley gave car owner Foyt wins five and six of the season with September pavement scores at the series debut on the one-mile New Hampshire International Speedway and again at the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway.

Jerry Coons Jr. was dominant at Eldora Speedway, leading all 50 laps for his first career Silver Crown triumph at the 4-Crown Nationals.

In the finale, Greenfield, Indiana’s Cameron Dodson became the fourth driver to win his first career Silver Crown race during the 2007 season, leading the final 17 laps of the Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway.

Dodson was named Silver Crown Rookie of the Year while Mat Neely was tabbed as the series’ Most Improved Driver.

STENHOUSE SURPRISES AT COPPER ON DIRT

Phoenix, Arizona………In only his sixth USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K & N Engineering race, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gave Carl Edwards-RE Technologies its first career series victory Saturday in the Copper on Dirt at Manzanita Speedway in front of a capacity crowd.

Stenhouse, who started seventh in the No. 199 Ford/Red Line Oil J & J/Ford, moved into the top-five shortly after the green flag flew and led twice for nine laps, including the final eight to win the first series opener away from Phoenix International Raceway since 2000.

“This is awesome, and it’s great to give this team this victory,” said Stenhouse, who hails from Olive Branch, Miss. “Without my sponsors and team, I couldn’t have done this.”

Stenhouse trailed Shane Cottle for much of the final half of the race. He stole second from Shane Hollingsworth on lap 32, then began working Cottle in any way he could.

Stenhouse waited until lap 36 to finally get by, inching Cottle at the line after diving to the bottom, but Cottle got him back on the next lap. Former series champion Dave Darland worked his tail tank for the next couple laps before the final caution on lap 42 came out.

Darland, trying desperately to pick off Stenhouse on the inside, spun in turn 3 and slid up into the upper groove of the half-mile. With nowhere to go, Hollingsworth popped into Darland’s left side, forcing the departure of both drivers from competition.

Stenhouse didn’t wait after that caution, however. Cottle got the jump at the flag stand but slid just high enough in turn 1 to allow Stenhouse a run. He snuck underneath Cottle entering turn 2, then completed the pass on the backstretch. He was never challenged thereafter.

“I joke around, saying these guys are my stepdads,” Stenhouse said. “They gave me great engines and a great car, and I’m ecstatic that we were able to end up in victory lane.”

Several drivers behind Cottle, Hollingsworth and Stenhouse went two and three-wide throughout the event. Defending series champion Bud Kaeding, who was repositioned to the tail of the field midway through the event, made his way back to fourth after working the top groove with newer tires.

Paul White, the last driver to win a season opener prior to Dave Steele’s five-year run (won at PIR in 2001) to start a season, was sandwiched in at third.  A.J. Fike finished fifth in the 50-lap race.

Mat Neely was not seriously injured in the race’s only flip, which occurred in turn 1 on lap 26 and brought out the race’s only red flag. Billy Wease was the only other driver to bring out a caution when he spun on lap 26, which perpetrated the ensuing restart which involved Neely’s incident.

Thirteen of the 20 starters finished the race on the lead lap.

HINES BRINGS FOYT BACK TO VICTORY LANE AT HOMESTEAD

Homestead, Florida………The No. 14 is back in victory lane in the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K & N Engineering.

Born in the same season driver A.J. Foyt won the USAC Silver Crown title in a four-race season, Tracy Hines scored Friday’s Homestead-Miami 100 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, driving for the legendary four-time Indianapolis 500 champion.

Hines, in his first race driving for Foyt as well as his first race in the new generation Silver Crown Series, led the final four laps of the 67-lapper for his seventh career series victory after leader Wayne Reutimann Jr.’s car came out of gear on lap 64. The victory earned Hines $26,000.

“The double zero (Reutimann) and the 26 (Pierce) were the class of the field,” said Hines, who started fifth in the No. 14 Greer Special C & R/Chevy. “But one thing we worry about is keeping our car consistent. The Greer Special was awesome. They called me over the winter and asked me to drive, and I said sure. I’m glad I did.”

Hines admitted after the race he didn’t have the best car, and he was right. That belonged to Reutimann, who battled with polesitter Aaron Pierce over the first 50 laps and was in position to win his second series race.

Reutimann soared past Pierce on lap 9 and, at points, established as much as a six-car advantage. He and Pierce weaved through traffic, and despite leading all the way until lap 64, didn’t have a comfortable advantage until just 17 laps remaining.

Pierce lost an engine on the main straightaway, his car bellowing smoke from the start/finish line all the way into turn 1. That misfortune led to the race’s only caution.

And even that caution, which slowed the event to an average speed of 156.779 mph, didn’t do justice to Reutimann. With five cars separating him and Hines, Reutimann ran off. Hines, in turn, lost second when Pablo Donoso went two-for-one, first passing Cameron Dodson for third and Hines for the runner-up spot.

Hines regained the position in the waning laps, and together, with Donoso and Dodson, started cutting deep into Reutimann’s lead.

The lead was cut to a second and a half before Reutimann’s car slowed considerably, jumping out of gear. Hines made the pass on the inside going into turn 1, while Donoso squeaked by on the outside, nearly hitting the turn 1 wall.

With his main competition out of sight, Hines pulled away from Donoso and Dodson, and celebrated Foyt’s 50th anniversary in major open-wheel motorsports with the coveted winner’s trophy.

“We’ve still got some things to learn,” said Hines, the new point leader by 12 over eighth-place finisher Paul White. “Yesterday (Thursday) was the first time I ever sat in one of these cars. This was our test because I had never had a test prior to this week. So, this was a good start in one of these.”

Eleven of the 17 cars finished the race. Rookie Ryan Moore finished fourth, while Reutimann came away with fifth, the last car on the lead lap.

SUPER-SUB EAST WINS AT IOWA

Newton, Iowa………Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind., subbing for the injured Tracy Hines, piloted A.J. Foyt’s car to victory in Saturday’s Casey’s General Stores USAC Triple Crown Silver Crown race at the Iowa Speedway. East led all but the first 7 laps after winning the pole at 132.342 mph in the Greer Special C & R Chevy.

East earned $15,500 for the win in the 100-lap race on the 7/8-mile paved oval. He was trailed by Aaron Pierce, Cameron Dodson, A.J. Fike and Tim Barber.

“I really have mixed emotions,” said East in victory lane. “Tracy is a great guy and a great competitor. Of course, I’m happy to get the ride, but I wish it was under different circumstances. This morning is the first time I’ve seen Iowa Speedway, but I like it.”

Hines, who won at Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 23 and led the series standings prior to Saturday’s race, is recuperating from leg injuries in Indianapolis, Ind.

PIERCE THRILLS AT DARLINGTON

Darlington, South Carolina………Aaron Pierce of Muncie, Ind. led USAC’s assault on Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on Thursday night and came away $23,500 richer after scoring a thrilling victory in the USAC Silver Crown Showdown at Darlington.

Pierce led a three-car freight train to the checkered flag as Wayne Reutimann Jr. of Zephyrhills, Fla. and Pablo Donoso of Santiago, Chile were less than a second behind and the crowd was on its feet for the final 20 laps around the 1.366-mile oval.

NASCAR regular J.J. Yeley won the pole for the 50-lap race in A.J. Foyt’s Greer Special at a speed of 163.555 mph, but Pierce started alongside on the front row. When the green flag waved, Yeley proceeded to disappear, extending his lead to nearly 10 seconds before a lap 23 yellow for debris on the backstretch.

On the restart, Yeley bobbled in turn two and Donoso slid by. Yeley regained momentum but he scraped the wall in turn three and was forced to the pits and out of the race. The crowd came to its feet as Pierce closed on Donoso and dove beneath him to take the lead in turn three on lap 37. Two laps later, Reutimann joined the fray and the three-car battle was on.

As the laps wound down, Donoso made a dive under Pierce on lap 48, but Reutimann slid around the top against the wall and took second. At the checkered flag, the crowd was cheering as the trio sailed across the finish line.

“Our plan, ever since we first tested here, was to lay back and wait for the leaders to use up their tires,” said Pierce, who piloted the Sam Pierce Chevrolet/Kroger-Tide-Bounty-Pringles Riley Chevy. “The tires really didn’t fall off bad and the track was great. It’s a real honor to win at this historic track.”

Pierce emerged as the new Silver Crown point leader, nine ahead of Reutimann.

Rounding out the top-five behind Pierce, Reutimann and Donoso were Bud Kaeding and Mat Neely.

The race was USAC’s first at Darlington since Pat O’Connor’s 1956 victory there and Jeff O’Connor, Pat’s son, served as the race’s Grand Marshal.

TYLER WINS THE BATTLE AT RICHMOND

Richmond, Virginia………Brian Tyler of Mount Pleasant, N.C. led the final 89 laps to win Saturday’s Silver Crown 100 at Richmond International Raceway in his Team Six-R C & R/Chevy. The win was Tyler’s 12th in series competition and his first in 2007.

Tyler started third and passed early leader A.J. Fike on lap 12. He was not seriously challenged the rest of the way and finished over a second ahead of runner-up Jerry Coons Jr.

"I made my move early," admitted Tyler after the race. "It's hard to pass out there and I figured I'd get to the front quick and stay there."

Bobby East, who won the USAC Sprint race earlier in the day at RIR, finished third, followed by Fike and pole winner Pablo Donoso. Donoso qualified at 127.914 mph on Friday but fell behind Fike at the start of Saturday’s 100-lap race.

Only three yellow flags interrupted the race, run at an average speed of 99.447 mph. Mike Murgoitio spun and hit the wall in turn three on lap 2, Cameron Dodson blew a tire on lap 24 and Bud Kaeding suffered a flat tire on lap 31.

YELEY FINDS LUCKY 13TH AT CHICAGOLAND

Joliet, Illinois………Call J.J. Yeley “Mr. Lucky” after his Friday victory in the USG Fiberock 100 at Chicagoland Speedway. Tony Stewart’s Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR teammate, Yeley, led all 67 laps of the 100-mile race in A.J. Foyt’s Greer Special C & R/Chevy. It was his 13th career series win following his 13th career series pole and occurred on Friday the 13th!

Yeley, of Phoenix, Ariz., was never seriously challenged during the race which was interrupted by only two cautions for just 10 laps. On both restarts he was able to resume command of the race.

“It felt good to get the win for the team,” said Yeley after the race. “I haven’t won for so long, I kind of forgot what it was like. I felt bad after the Darlington (S.C.) race in May where we had such a good car and had a tire go down. I didn’t think they were going to let me back in the car. I told my wife I was running the Silver Crown race today (Friday the 13th) and she said be careful and only call her if I win. So, I still get to talk to my family.”

Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif. scored his best-ever finish as Friday’s runner-up, while series point leader Wayne Reutimann Jr. was third, Cameron Dodson fourth and P.J. Jones fifth.

The only yellows flew on lap 31 for Paul White, whose car was smoking in turn four and on lap 50 for Aaron Pierce slowing in turn 3.

Yeley’s pole speed was 174.842 mph.

EAST LEADS FOYT TEAM SWEEP AT ORP

Clermont, Indiana………Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. led a 1-2 sweep at Thursday night’s J.D. Byrider 100 K & N USAC Silver Crown Championship race at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis for the A.J. Foyt Racing Team.

East led all 100 laps after starting next to pole winner Jason Leffler. East’s teammate, Pablo Donoso of Chile, finished second behind East’s Greer C & R/Chevy, while Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif. took third.

“The car was awesome,” said East after the race. “After lap 60 I wasn’t worried about saving anything, but the track became slippery and we could barely run wide open in the late stages. It feels good to have two wins this year and it’s always good to give A.J. a victory.”

The race was slowed by six cautions for minor incidents and East’s average speed was 86.304 mph. Leffler, who was a last-minute addition to the field, was the fastest qualifier at 113.368 mph but slipped to third at the start and was never really a serious threat.

Series point leader Wayne Reutimann Jr. retired from the race after 91 laps with ignition trouble but was able to hang on to the point lead, seven ahead of defending champion Bud Kaeding, who finished seventh.

YELEY DEFEATS THE DARKNESS AT NEW HAMPSHIRE

Loudon, New Hampshire………NASCAR veteran and USAC Triple Crown Champion J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. won Saturday’s New Hampshire 50 K & N USAC Silver Crown race at New Hampshire Speedway, halted after 31 laps due to darkness.

Yeley led all 31 laps of the race, which was originally scheduled for 75 laps, shortened to 50, then checkered flagged after 31 as darkness fell on the track. Yeley piloted A.J. Foyt’s #14 Greer Special/Foyt Racing C & R/Chevy to the win, the fifth for the car and second for Yeley this season.

Teammate Pablo Donoso of Chile finished second, followed by Brian Tyler, Josh Wise and Aaron Pierce.

“I wish I had someone to race a little more with during the race,” said Yeley, who had a comfortable lead until yellow flags came out. “But, being out front wasn’t too bad. Seeing the track wasn’t too bad until the final caution. I have a smoked visor and when they told us debris on the front stretch, I lifted my visor and couldn’t see any better. I figured then it was time to call it and they did.”

Yeley continued, “These cars are really fun to drive. This car will prepare any driver for Indy Car or NASCAR with the way they handle and how you have to drive them.”

Series point leader Bud Kaeding finished 10th and carries a 47-point lead over Wayne Reutimann Jr.

Yeley started eighth but used the top of the racetrack to slingshot to the lead on the opening lap and he was about a second and a half ahead of pole starter Wayne Reutimann Jr. when the checkered flag waved 42 minutes later, averaging 141.238 mph. for the 100.5-mile distance.

“The car was totally tight in qualifying, so we put it back on the scales and found a few things wrong,” said Yeley after the race. “We got it better, obviously. After running the Busch race, I hoped everybody went low in turn one on the start and I went to the top and got the lead off turn two. George (Snider) and the crew do such a good job with this car that it makes it fun to drive. I had to win today so I could run at Phoenix in November.”

Cameron Dodson finished third, ahead of Jerry Coons Jr. and series point leader Bud Kaeding, whose lead stands at 57 points over Reutimann.

Only two yellows slowed Saturday’s race. Debris forced a caution on lap 11 and Pablo Donoso blew a tire and spun on the backstretch on lap 39.
