1975 USAC DIRT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON REVIEW
"Don't ever try to outbrave a cancer patient," was the rallying cry of Jimmy Caruthers during his 1975 USAC Championship Dirt season.
Right out of a Hollywood script, this true-life racing hero fought through a cancer diagnosis that couldn’t deny him the ultimate prize of a title run, passing away just seven weeks following his completion of the season championship.
The late Caruthers would have cherished his awards for winning the championship. He was that kind of man – dedicated and intensely competitive. It is fitting that such a man should become the king of one of the most competitive divisions in the sport.
Jimmy was one of two sons of USAC car owner Doug Caruthers who made a lasting impression upon the USAC gentry and concluded their careers at the top of their chosen profession. Danny emerged as the 1971 USAC National Midget champion despite his tragic fatal accident late in that same season.
Jimmy died of cancer after realizing the 1975 Dirt Car championship, but the memory of his brilliant drive toward the title will live as a testimony to his gutsy determination. He finished no worse than fourth in the five races which compromised the 1975 circuit, and despite failing to score a victory, he still claimed over $16,000 in prize money for his efforts piloting the Pizza Hut of St. Louis Dirt car.
Jimmy won the 1970 USAC Midget crown, the year before his brother, and will also be remembered for his magnificent drive in the 1974 Schaefer 500 Championship race at Pocono Raceway in which he finished second to Johnny Rutherford. He apparently celebrated that finish for quite some time and was certainly destined for grater accomplishments.
His consistency on the Dirt car circuit in 1975 was such that Tom Bigelow fell short of Jimmy’s point total despite winning the last three races of the series.
The 1975 USAC National Dirt Car Championship took on an added dimension when it was announced that the Dirt cars would compete on a paved half-mile track in St. Paul, Minn. The venture marked the first time that the big cars had run on a paved half-mile since 1956 and the skeptics were astounded when they found out that the 200-lapper had been run with just one caution flag for a spinout, 153 laps into the race.
Since its separation from the USAC National Championship trail in 1971, the Dirt car circuit had confined its activities to the large dirt ovals, but the addition of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds oval to the schedule in 1975 “paved” the way for the inclusion of several new tracks to the Dirt car circuit in the future.
Defending Dirt car champion Mario Andretti decided to sit the 1975 season out, in regards to the Dirt car schedule, and his teammate Al Unser scored his first victory in two years on the trail by winning the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield, Ill.
Sheldon Kinser, an unheralded Indianapolis 500 Rookie in 1975, captured the opener at Syracuse, N.Y., much to the surprise of everyone, and Tom Bigelow grabbed the Ted Horn Memorial at Du Quoin, Ill., the Minnesota State Fair race and the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The concluding series event, the rich Hoosier Hundred, was one of the classic races of all time, with several drivers sharing the lead and Caruthers preserving his Dirt car crown with his third-place finish. A sixth-place finish or worse would have robbed Jimmy of the title.
Large fields of cars were the rule at all five events on the Dirt car calendar, and the caliber of competition was at its highest level in years. Bruce Walkup and Johnny Parsons joined Bigelow and Unser as pole winners and Arnie Knepper and Larry Rice grabbed some of the glory with second-place finishes at Syracuse and Du Quoin, respectively. A.J. Foyt even competed in the Hoosier Hundred, and despite an ill-handling car which belched smoke the last 40 laps, he finished second to Bigelow.

KINSER SURPRISES SYRACUSE DIRT CAR FOES
Syracuse, New York………Sheldon Kinser, driving the Dave McIntire Chevy Center Special owned by Grant and Doris King, won the Salt City 100 USAC Championship Dirt Car race July 4 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The victory was only Kinser’s second in USAC competition and his biggest by far.
He beat Arnie Knepper to the flag after grabbing the lead from Bruce Walkup, who was encountering tire trouble, at the 46-lap mark.
The race was slowed by yellow flags on three occasions, one for a three-car tangle involving Billy Cassella, Rollie Beale and Mel Cornett, but there were no injuries.

AL’S VICEROY FORD WINS AT SPRINGFIELD
Springfield, Illinois………Point leader Sheldon Kinser was sidelined from Springfield’s Tony Bettenhausen 100 on August 16 and watched as Al Unser won a classic USAC Dirt car race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt track. Kinser’s car developed problems and missed the show.
Al was followed by Jimmy Caruthers, Jackie Howerton, Billy Engelhart and Billy Cassella. Caruthers’ finish put him atop the Dirt point standings with 280, compared to Engelhart’s 220, Sheldon Kinser’s 200 and Al Unser’s 200.
The race marked Jim Hurtubise’s return to Dirt Champ racing as he finished sixth.

BIGELOW WINS HORN MEMORIAL AT Du QUOIN
Du Quoin, Illinois………Tom Bigelow, winner of the May 1972 USAC Championship Dirt race at Du Quoin, Ill., returned to the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt oval on August 24 to win the Ted Horn Memorial 100-miler.
Driving the Leader Card-Lodestar Ford, Tom led all 100 laps after beating pole winner Al Unser into the first turn at the start.
Unser hit the first turn wall on lap 47 while chasing the leader and Tom’s only other serious challenger during the race was Larry Rice who finished second in the LeFevre Chevy.
Series point leader Jimmy Caruthers finished fourth behind Sammy Sessions and leads the standings over Arnie Knepper (5th at Du Quoin) by 140 points.
Jackie Howerton and Rollie Beale both dropped out in the closing laps while running third at Du Quoin. Howerton’s engine let go in the Sinmast Special on lap 97 and Beale struck the second turn wall on lap 81.

BIGELOW GRABS ST. PAUL 200 VICTORY
St. Paul, Minnesota………Tom Bigelow chopped Jimmy Caruthers’ point lead in the USAC Championship Dirt car division slightly by winning the August 31 200-lap race at St. Paul, Minn.
Bigelow led most of the 200 laps around the half-mile paved Minnesota State Fairgrounds oval in the Leader Card-Lodestar Ford as Caruthers finished second.
The St. Paul race marked the first appearance of the Dirt cars on a half-mile paved oval since their 1956 Dayton (Ohio) Speedway race and, remarkably, only one yellow flag slowed the event. Pancho Carter spun on lap 153. A total of 17 of the 24 starters were still running at the finish.

BIGELOW WINS HOOSIER HUNDRED; CARUTHERS TAKES DIRT TITLE
Indianapolis, Indiana………Tom Bigelow’s victory at the September 6 Hoosier Hundred in Indianapolis was his third consecutive on the USAC Championship Dirt Car circuit but failed to earn him the season championship.
That honor went to Jimmy Caruthers, third-place finisher in the finale, by 60 points. It was the second USAC National crown for Jimmy, having previously won the Midget title in 1970.
Bigelow and the Leader Card-Lodestar Ford took over the lead from a faltering Johnny Parsons, who had started on the pole and led much of the early going, with 25 laps to go. Johnny dropped out seven laps from the finish.
Parsons’ strongest challenge during the early laps came from Billy Engelhart, who eventually took the lead at lap 52 and led until lap 68, seemingly on his way to victory. Billy scraped the wall, however, and dropped out of the running.
A.J. Foyt, making his first Dirt Car appearance of the season, started 14th and drove a smoking car to second place, some six seconds back. Larry Rice earned Rookie of the Race honors for his 10th place finish.
Parsons established a new one-lap track record during qualifying of 108.063 mph, but a red flag for a flipping Billy Vukovich took away any chance of a 100-mile record.
