A LOOK BACK: 1995 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON
Tony Stewart scored seven feature wins in the 1995 Loctite/USAC Sprint Car series, but the five he won in the last half of the season helped him capture the series title.
Challenged by defending series champion Doug Kalitta and perennial point leader Eric Gordon, Tony shook both in early September and locked up the crown with his victory in the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora.
At one point, all three were tied for the point lead. Gordon broke that tie with his July 15 “Oldtimers Weekend” triumph, but mechanical problems thereafter hindered his title run.
Kalitta’s lack of a feature victory until the series finale at Winchester in October obviously hurt his chances for a repeat, but he salvaged the runner-up spot with numerous top-ten finishes.
Included among Stewart’s wins in the Boles Chevrolet/TCI of Central Indiana machine were two at Indianapolis Raceway Park, extending car owner Glen Niebel’s streak there to six consecutive races, plus pivotal wins at Santa Fe and Granite City. The Hinsdale victory in late-July put him atop the standings to stay and the Granite City win, coupled with Kalitta’s 20th place finish in the 20-car field, virtually put Kalitta out of the picture. Other Stewart wins included the “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” as Salem and another at I-70.
The first four races of the year produced four different point leaders, with Gordon finally taking over for nearly two months. Kenny Irwin, Jr. won two of the early races, and four total, on the pavement but inconsistent performances on the dirt left him 10th in the final points. On the pavement, though, Irwin was awesome, setting track records everywhere.
Jack Hewitt landed six wins on dirt, including the “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute, the “Robbie Stanley Classic” at Lawrenceburg and the “Jim Hurtubise Classic” at Terre Haute. Other winners included Chet Fillip and Brian Tyler in nationally-televised races, plus Kevin Doty, Tray House, Tony Elliott, Byron Reed and Mark Cassella.
