MIDGETS INVADE COLORADO SATURDAY

MIDGETS INVADE COLORADO SATURDAY;

ABREU NOTCHES 1ST USAC NATIONAL WIN AT ANGELL PARK

Bobby Santos of Franklin, Mass. is the most recent winner in the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series, which competes as part of Saturday’s USAC “Rocky Mountain Classic” doubleheader at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo. But don’t overlook him in the adjoining Honda USAC National Midgets as they tackle the one-mile paved oval Saturday.

Santos has a six-point lead over defending National Champion Darren Hagen and Caleb Armstrong in the Midget standings after the opening races of the season.

Santos won one of two races at New Smyrna Beach, Fla. in February and was second to Hagen in the “Night Before the 500” classic in Indianapolis, Ind. last month.

Drivers will aim for Ryan Newman’s one-lap Midget track record of 139.265 mph at PPIR when the USAC Midgets make their first appearance there in eight years.

Rico Abreu of Rutherford, Calif. finally found the winners circle in the Honda USAC National Midget series Sunday night at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisc. Driving the Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Toyota TRD/Bullet, he led the final nine laps of the 11th “Sue Thiel Memorial” after passing Tracy Hines in lap 22. He also led the first four laps before Hines and Caleb Armstrong battled for the front spot.

Hagen was second in the 30-lap race ahead of Hines, Jerry Coons Jr. and Andrew Felker. The race was co-sanctioned by POWRi and BMARA.
