CONSISTENT SCHRADER SEALS 1983 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT TITLE

Consistency was the key to success as Ken Schrader and the Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy walked off with the 1983 USAC National “Thunder & Lightning” Sprint Car championship.

Ken opened the season with a victory at Paragon, then added another triumph in the “Pole Night Hoosier Sprints” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May.  The balance of the season failed to produce any more feature wins but his record of finishing all but one race in the top-six earned him the crown by a whopping margin over runner-up Larry Rice.

Schrader’s consistency also paid off with the championship in the six-race Danners/USAC Midwest Sprint Car Series, which incorporated six of the final seven events of the season.  Rice’s performance in those events, which landed him the runner-up spot in the Danners points, also helped boost him past defending National Sprint Car champ Sheldon Kinser for the National runner-up spot.

Kinser, the series titlist the past two seasons, was winless throughout most of the season but ended that drought in the opening race of the Danners Series at Lincoln Park.  Sheldon earlier had been involved in a controversial finish at Eldora and was denied victory in that race due to a rule infraction.

Jack Hewitt, winner of that controversial Eldora feature when Kinser’s car was disqualified due to low tire pressure, was the winningest driver in the 1983 National series, with five feature wins, including the prestigious “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute in May.  Hewitt became the 12th different winner of the classic.

Hewitt also won the “4-Crown Nationals” feature at Eldora, the final event of the season.

Other highlights of the season included Danny Milburn’s victory in the Danners Series at Lawrenceburg.  The 1982 season Rookie of the Year had not previously tasted victory in USAC competition.

Larry Martin and Kelly Kinser also tasted victory for the first time under USAC sanction, Kinser winning a pair of main events at Lincoln Park and Paragon, and Martin emerging as the winner of a bizarre race at Bloomington.

Martin’s win came about as the result of Rick Hood’s flip on the final turn of the final lap at Bloomington.  Hood was leading at the time and Martin running third.  On the restart, local favorite Rodney Ritter grabbed the lead and held it to the finish, but it was discovered after the race that his engine was oversized, and he was disqualified, leaving Martin as the race winner.

Outlaw star Steve Kinser scored an impressive win at Santa Fe and Rick Hood won a Danners Series feature at Tri-State while Rich Vogler, the 1980 series champion, scored back-to-back victories in the “Don Branson/Jud Larson Memorial” at Eldora and at Terre Haute in June.

Veteran Dean Shirley was impressive enough in victory at Kokomo to haul down 1983 True Value Hardware Company Rookie of the Year honors.  He also set a new track record for the USAC Sprints at Paragon.

The influence of Danners’ involvement with the series was expected to be a long-lasting one, with several tracks joining USAC for the first time in 1983 and planning to continue their USAC activity in 1984 as a direct result of the Danners sponsorship.

Schrader’s championship was his second in as many years with USAC, having won the 1982 Silver Crown Championship Series title.  Ken tied Rich Vogler as USAC’s winningest driver in 1983, scoring a total of eight USAC wins, including his two Sprint feature triumphs.

Veteran observers liken Schrader’s capabilities behind the wheel to those of A.J. Foyt, for whom Ken admits he has utmost admiration.  “I’d like to have the capabilities he has of winning races, his records are unbelievable,” he said in a post season interview.
