A LOOK BACK: 1984 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Rick Hood suffered two broken legs in a mishap at Manzanita on October 17, but that didn’t keep him from wearing the crown as the 1984 USAC “Thunder & Lightning” Sprint Car Series champion.

Hood had finished practicing for a non-USAC-sanctioned race at Manzanita and was walking across the infield when an errant sprinter struck him and two other men.  The accident came two nights before he was to have competed in the first of two scheduled USAC/CRA “Challenge” races on the West Coast.

Rick became the driver for the Damon “Blackie” Fortune team for the 1984 season when 1983 champ Ken Schrader elected to give up the ride to pursue other commitments.  Driving the Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy, Rick’s performances left race fans with many memorable moments about which to reminisce during the winter months.

Sheldon Kinser, winner of the 1977, 1981 and 1982 USAC Sprint Car titles, had his sights firmly set on becoming the first four-time USAC Sprint Champ when the season began.  Unfortunately, he spent most of the year trying to overhaul Hood but was never able to surpass Rick in the standings.

Rick’s debut as the Fortune team driver came in the April 1 opener at Eldora.  He took second to winner Jac Haudenschild, who was competing on a non-points license, therefore taking the early lead in the series standings.  He never gave up that lofty position, although Kinser kept the pressure on throughout most of the season.

Sheldon got upside down in the nationally-televised program at Eldora in late April, while young Steve Butler earned the first of five wins he was to post in 1984.  Hood was runner-up in the 30-lapper and extended his lead.

Sheldon then took a 30-lapper at Santa Fe in May as fast qualifier Hood was seventh, cutting the lead to 12 points.  The two then traded second and third place finishes at Putnamville and Haubstadt as Chuck Amati won the “Pre-Indy Sprints” and Butler grabbed a hard-fought victory at Haubstadt.

Hood took a giant step toward the 1984 title, winning a 40-lapper at Lawrenceburg with fast qualifier Kinser third, then following the next afternoon with a sensational victory in the prestigious “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute.  Kinser managed only an 11th place finish at Terre Haute and now trailed by 35 points.  Hood then pushed the lead to 58 points by finishing second to Jack Hewitt at Kokomo.

Sheldon was the fast qualifier for the races at Danville and Eldora in July but was runner-up in both 30-lap main events.  The reason why?  Hood was the feature winner on both occasions.

A third consecutive 1-2 finish for the duo came at Putnamville, but this time it was Kinser who got to the checkered flag first.

Hood was fast qualifier for the next two races, at Paragon and Bloomington, but a flat tire cost him the win at Bloomington as Kinser won and sliced the lead to just 30 points.  Butler had posted his fourth series triumph at Paragon the previous week.

A third-straight fast qualifying time made Hood the favorite when the series returned to Paragon in August, but he had to settle for second behind the high-flying Butler.  Kinser was the first driver forced from the 30-lapper and dropped to 57 points back in the standings.

Sheldon posted fast time for the “Eldora Nationals” and when Hood’s car broke in practice for the August 16 race, it appeared that Sheldon would close the point gap.  Rick found another ride for his heat race but the engine in that car went away and he finally wound up in Greg Staab’s machine for the main event.  He finished third as Kinser took sixth behind winner Jack Hewitt.

Rick’s lead dropped back to just 36 points when engine problems forced him out of the lead in a 30-lapper at Terre Haute on August 26.  Kinser wound up third behind Butler.

The Labor Day weekend proved the pivot point for both drivers.  They hooked up in a classic duel with several other drivers in a 50-lapper at Granite City with Hood emerging as the winner of what many observers claimed to be the “greatest USAC Sprint race ever.”  Sheldon was fourth and a subsequent eighth-place finish at Haubstadt the following night left him now 86 points down to Hood, who again found victory lane.

Kinser’s title hopes vanished as he missed the main at Lawrenceburg in September and Hood eventually ended up with a 102-point cushion for the year.

Danny Milburn scored his second-straight September win at Lawrenceburg and the series concluded with the triple rainout of the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora.

The series was one of the most competitive in recent years but suffered the loss of young Jeff Thickstun from Nashville, Indiana in a shuddering crash at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May.

The Sprint Car Competition Commission, in a move expected to expand the scope of the series in 1985, voted at its late-1984 session, to allow 410-cubic-inch engines to compete during the 1985 series.
