A LOOK BACK: 1985 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

A LOOK BACK: 1985 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Rick Hood’s surprising victory in the opening event of the 1985 Crestliner Vans/USAC National Sprint Car Series gave him a point lead he would never relinquish as he led the Fortune Racing Team to a third consecutive series championship.

Hood and the Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy romped to nine wins and Rick also emerged as the champion of the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Challenge Series, an 11-race series within a series.

Rick’s season-opening victory at Manzanita was remarkable in that five months earlier he had suffered two badly-broken legs in a freak accident at the same track.  While walking through the infield to watch a practice session, he was struck by a sprint car and spent the rest of 1984 and early 1985 recuperating.

That initial Manzanita triumph came in the George Toney/Kenny Jarrett Farms sprinter, but he soon was back in the cockpit of the Fortune car, which he had driven to the 1984 title, and ended up with more than a 300-point cushion over his nearest rival at season’s end.

The debut of Crestliner Van Conversions of Richmond, Indiana as series sponsor coincided with USAC’s increase in engine sizes to 410 c.i. maximum and created a very competitive atmosphere.  Not only did many drivers experience their first taste of USAC victory, but the series expanded to include several tracks in locations not visited for a number of years.  This expansion movement is expected to continue in 1986, with the new 410 c.i. rule allowing more participants to compete in USAC races.

Steve Butler and Sheldon Kinser waged a terrific duel for the runner-up point ranking, switching the spot back and forth until Butler finally found victory lane at Putnamville in August.  From there, Steve held on to nose out Sheldon by 21 points at the end of the campaign.

Kinser’s 1985 season included a victory in the historic Midwest debut of the USAC/CRA Challenge at Putnamville and a Paragon victory which ended a four-race winning streak for Hood.

Youthful Terry Shepherd recorded a sensational feature win at Santa Fe to cap his Rookie season and take fourth in the final standings, with veteran Larry Rice closing out the Midwest schedule with a popular “4-Crown Nationals” win for fifth in the points.

Ron Shuman sped into national prominence with his nationally-televised victory in the “Tony Hulman Classic” main event at Terre Haute in May, while CRA regulars Lealand McSpadden, Eddie Wirth, Bubby Jones, Mike Sweeney and Bob East all registered feature wins.

First-time winners, in addition to Shepherd, Wirth and Sweeney, included Alan Brown, “Labor Day 100” winner Randy Standridge, hometown hero Mike Ward at West Memphis and, surprisingly, the ageless Bob Kinser.

Ohio favorites Jac Haudenschild and Jack Hewitt also cracked the winner’s circle as 17 different drivers earned feature trophies in the 27-race series.

The title was the third in a row for car owner Damon “Blackie” Fortune, who also fielded 1983 champion Ken Schrader’s machine.
