A LOOK BACK: 1989 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Back in 1960 and ’61, Parnelli Jones and Jim Hurtubise blazed a winning trail in the USAC Sprint Car division with their Chevy-powered cars.  Nicknamed the “Chevy Twins,” the two California hot-rodders changed history by upsetting the then-dominant Offenhauser-powered cars with their Chevy V-8s.

In 1989, it was driver Rich Vogler and the Hoffman family from Cincinnati, Ohio who introduced a V-6 Buick to USAC Sprint Car racing and stormed their way to the Loctite/Crestliner Vans USAC National Sprint Car Series driver and owner championships.

Scoring five feature wins and three third-place finishes in 19 starts, Rich also set fastest qualifying times an amazing 10 times, including a string of four-in-a-row and nine times in 11 consecutive races.  He finished in the top-ten 13 times in the Hoffman sprinter.

Actually, the Dynamics, Inc./Hoffman Auto Racing Team utilized both the Chevy V-8 and the V-6 Buick for power in their bid for the 1989 title.  “We ran a Gaerte Chevy for dirt and the Buick V-6 on pavement tracks,” said crew chief Dick Hoffman.  “The Buick is lighter than a V-8.  It gave us a weight advantage and has greater acceleration off the turns.”

Of the five feature wins they scored in ’89, four were on pavement and the single dirt win came at Moberly in a winged event – Vogler’s first in USAC competition.

Seventeen-year-old Jeff Gordon of Pittsboro, Ind. was the early sensation of the series as he took the point lead following his impressive triumph in the May 20 opener at Florence.

Jim Moulis, who ranked third in the final points, took over the series point lead after a fourth-place finish in the June 5 winged feature at Haubstadt.  Former champion Rick Hood drove to a new track record as well as a victory in the Haubstadt feature, his 21st in USAC competition, then repeated as the feature winner two weeks later at Attica.

Jeff Gordon regained the point lead after a pair of fourth-place finishes on the high banks of Salem, and on the dirt at Buckeye Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, which were won by Wayne Hammond and Danny Smith, respectively.

June and July produced four different winners in four events.  Veteran Jack Hewitt won the June 25 feature at Kokomo.  Wayne Hammond led all 30 laps to win the June 29 Skoal Bandit Racing “Indyana Sprint Classic” at Indianapolis Raceway Park before a live ESPN television audience in the opening event of the five-race “Hardee’s Deluxe Racing Series.”

Rodney Ritter, Jr. led all 30 laps to score his first USAC triumph in the July 1 winged feature at Lawrenceburg.  Two days later, Vogler posted his third consecutive new track record during qualifying at Berlin.  He then wheeled the Hoffman V-6 Buick to a 30-lap win in the first USAC Sprint race at Berlin in a dozen years.  It was also the first time a non-Chevrolet engine had captured a USAC Sprint feature in 16 years.

Vogler repeated at the next event – at Indianapolis Raceway Park – before the TV cameras again on July 13.  This was the second of six consecutive pavement outings.  The 1989 USAC Sprint season saw a most-diversified schedule of events with seven winged races on dirt, a pair of dirt non-wing events and 11 pavement races which included three on the speedy high banks at Salem and Winchester and five at IRP.  ESPN’s live telecasts put a nationwide audience in the stands for those five races in “Thursday Night Thunder” action.

Supermodified veteran Gene Lee Gibson of Richwood, Ohio then grabbed the spotlight as he scored back-to-back wins in the Johnny Vance/Aristocrat Products sprinter at Winchester and Indianapolis Raceway Park.  Then Vogler came back and captured the next two on the pavement.  The 39-year-old resident of Indianapolis assumed command of the Loctite/Crestliner Vans point lead with his victories at Winchester and the “Tony Hulman Classic.”  “Rapid Rich” also set quick time at both events.  He then took a sixth on the dirt at Granite City as defending champion Steve Butler scored his first win of the season in the Stoops Racing No. 1.

Vogler’s first winged USAC triumph came in a 30-lapper at the new Moberly Motorsports Complex.  Despite setting quick time at Toledo on September 10, he was involved in a crash and ranked 20th in the feature as young Eric Gordon of Greenfield, Ind. scored a very popular victory.

The USAC Sprints then headed north for the $50,000 “Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.”  The opener of Canada’s newest half-mile paved oval in Bowmanville, Ontario was significant for Vogler as he would clinch his second series title with only the “4-Crown Nationals” event remaining on the schedule.  Wayne Hammond and Gary Fedewa won the Mosport features with Vogler 19th and 5th, respectively.  However, he earned enough points to eliminate the challenge of 21-year-old Eric Gordon, who finished fifth and second in Canada and was the series runner-up for the year.

Three-time USAC titlist Steve Butler won the 30-lap series finale at the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora on September 24.  Vogler was eighth in the final race.
