A LOOK BACK: 1991 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON
Robbie Stanley of Brownsburg, Ind. surprised the Loctite/USAC National Sprint Car Series participants in 1991, winning the championship after a season-long duel with 1989-90 runner-up Eric Gordon and four-time series champion Steve Butler.
Stanley broke from the gate with gusto, winning the series-opening Pepsi-Cola “Rich Vogler Classic” at Winchester, then repeating at Winchester a month later in a nationally-televised ESPN feature in his Smokey’s Stove & Spa Shop Special.
Robbie maintained the lead until August but was involved in a crash during a 30-lapper at Salem on August 11 and Eric’s third-place there boosted him into the series lead. Eric won the 21st “Tony Hulman Classic” at Indianapolis Raceway Park on August 17 and stayed in front until the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora on September 22. Then it was his turn to be involved in a crash and Stanley was able to regain the point lead with a sixth-place finish.
Stanley’s third-place finish in the series’ Lanier debut on October 12 coupled with Gordon’s tenth place, left Robbie with a decent lead going into the series finale at Winchester on November 2-3. Bitter cold, which created icy, snowy track conditions on November 3, forced cancellation of the last race and left Stanley holding his first title.
Steve Butler’s bid for a record fifth series championship fell short, although he was mathematically in the battle until the final race and turned in some impressive performances during the year, scoring traditional wins in the “Carquest Sprint Classic” at IRP and the “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” at Salem.
Other series highlights included Jack Hewitt’s victories in the “Jim Hurtubise Classic” at Terre Haute and the $10,000-to-win “4-Crown” at Eldora, Danny Smith’s back-to-back “Clark Oil” victories at Granite City, Jim Keeker’s Winchester “Oldtimers” and Lanier triumphs, Gene Lee Gibson’s win in the Skoal Bandit Racing “Indyana Sprint Classic” at IRP, Kelly Kinser’s winged triumphs at Kokomo and K-C Raceway, first-time USAC victories for Brett Mann at I-96, Jim Mahoney at Lakeside and Eric Gordon’s pavement wins at Berlin and Winchester in addition to his IRP victory mentioned earlier.
In addition, Doug Wolfgang won a regional event at Granite City in June and Randy Tiner won USAC’s first-ever 360 Sprint main event at Bakersfield in October.
Series veteran Greg Staab, who suffered a serious concussion at Lakeside in September, was forced out for the balance of the season but returned as a spectator and looks forward to 1992.
