The annual "Salute to Indy" has been a Southern California tradition going back to 1948 when Dempsey Wilson claimed the checkered flags with the original California Racing Association. When Perris Auto Speedway opened their doors in 1996, the Riverside County oval kept the tradition alive and NASCAR driver J.J. Yeley scored the victory. Last year, “The Big Game Hunter” Austin Williams led all 30-laps to add the “Salute to Indy” to his resume.

Since March 6, 2004, the Lake Perris Fairgrounds has held 195 USAC/CRA Sprint Car events. “The Demon” Damion Gardner leads all drivers with 41 victories and Nic Faas set the 1-lap qualifying record of 15.833 on February 25, 2012. In the two previous visits of 2017, Richard Vander Weerd and Gardner earned wins at USAC/CRA’s ‘home track.” A complete Perris series win list is at the end of this release.

Entering the fifth point race, “The Demon” Damion Gardner (Concord, California) has a thirty-four point advantage after running second to Mike Spencer at Ventura on May 6th. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner has two feature wins, two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, three heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and 40 feature laps led on the season. The five-time champion leads all USAC/CRA drivers with 72 victories and will be looking to win his fourth “Salute to Indy.”

Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California) is second in the point standings. Racing the #91R BR Performance owned HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa finished third at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. To date, last year’s USAC West Coast Champion has posted one heat race victory, four top-10 finishes, and 6 feature laps led to his credit. Brody has one career USAC/CRA triumph and will have his sights on adding his name to the “Salute to Indy” winner’s list.

Mike Spencer (Temecula, California) has climbed to third in the point chase after winning at Ventura. Driving the Gansen Engineering Motorsports #4S Trench Shoring / Ram-Bull Racing Maxim, Spencer has one feature win, two heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led on the year. As this writing goes to press, the five-time champion has thirty-eight career USAC/CRA wins and will be looking to earn his second “Salute to Indy” victory.

Jake Swanson (Anaheim, California) ranks fourth in the chase for the championship. Piloting Tom and Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Clackamas Rigging and Transfer XXX, Swanson ran eleventh at Ventura Raceway. At press time, the 2012 Rookie of the Year has one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, two heat race victories, and three top-10 finishes on the season. Jake has one career USAC/CRA win and will have his sights on taking the victory at Perris Auto Speedway.

“The Cadillac” Cody Williams sits fifth in the championship point standings. Racing Jack Jory’s #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, led one lap at Ventura before scoring fourteenth at the checkered flags. To date, the 2010 Victorville Sprint Car Champion has posted three top-10 finishes and 14 feature laps led in the campaign. “The Cadillac” has one career USAC/CRA victory and will be looking to gain valuable points with win this Saturday night.

Currently twelfth in points, Matt McCarthy (Riverside, California) leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Kyle Edwards (Fountain Valley, California) is also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Big Game Hunter” Austin Williams, Logan Williams, Chris Gansen, Richard Vander Weerd, Tommy “Thunder” Malcolm, ”The Bear” Jeremy Ellertson, “The Flying Peanut” Parker Colston, Jace Vander Weerd, Eddie Tafoya, Verne Sweeney, Max Adams, and more.

Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California. Adult tickets are $25, Senior tickets (65 and over) are $20, Active Military (with ID), Students (13-18), and Kids tickets (6-12) are $5. Children’s tickets (5 and under) are FREE.
