UPDATED Battle at the Brickyard "Race of Champions" Details

INAUGURAL

HONDA USAC .25 MIDGET “BATTLE AT THE BRICKYARD”

“RACE OF CHAMPIONS ANNOUNCED”

We are pleased to announce a unique racing opportunity that will be added to the 2014 “Battle at the Brickyard” event at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This unique race will allow drivers to compete for yearly bragging rights at the famous venue.

With the support of Honda HPD and Hoosier tire the race competitors will have the chance to participate in this unique event.  Competitors will be given four tires, and a motor to use specifically for this one race. Hoosier will provide new tires that must be mounted on each car prior to the start of the events activities on Saturday. The same tires must be used for practice, and the A Main. Heat races will be ran on a competitors own equipment (Tires and 160 Motors, DRIVERS DO NOT HAVE TO USE UT2 MOTORS FOR THE HEAT RACES. THEY JUST HAVE TO COMPLY WITH CURRENT LIGHT 160 REQUIREMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU USE A UT2 IN YOUR HEAT RACE YOU MUST RUN A UT2 160 RESTRICTOR PLATE, LIKE ALWAYS UT1 160’s DO NOT REQUIRE A RESTRICTOR PLATE), but will be subjected to tech inspection at USAC’s discretion. Tires that are distributed for the event on Saturday must be mounted on the car and show up to the staging grid in the wrappers prior to the practice session. Tires will be marked after the practice session and must be again used for the A main following the 2 minute practice session on Saturday.

Honda HPD will provide 12 race ready UT2 160 motors that will be marked 1-12. Drivers eligible to compete in the Race of Champions event will pill draw for their Heat race starting position. After the conclusion of the heats, the top 12 in passing points will be locked into Saturday’s inaugural A Main for the Race of Champions. At the conclusion of the heats the top 12 in passing points will then pill draw for their starting position and motor in Saturday’s A Main event. (Example pill #1 starts on the pole and receives the motor marked #1.) The order that the drivers pill draw will be based on passing points from the heat races. The driver that earned the most points will draw first. The driver that earned the 12th most will draw last. There will not be an alternate for the event on Saturday. The Race of Champions A Main will take place at the conclusion of all other competitive class A mains on Saturday.

FOR RACE OF CHAMPION A MAINS ONLY

  • Shorty Mufflers will supply exhaust for each of the motors in the 2014 race of champions. USAC will not supply the throttle linkage or gear hub for the motors.
  • Standard UT2 Light 160 rules will apply to the class, this includes weight requirements for the car. All cars will run a purple UT2 Light 160 restrictor plate during the event.
  • Gear ratio is open for this event.
  • Hoosier will offer both 31 and 32 size tires for the left side. Wheels for the tires will not be supplied by USAC.

Drivers will draw for their heat race starting position during the race of champions on Tuesday as part of sign ins.

Approximately 15 to 20 minutes after the completion of practice for all other competitive classes on Wednesday, cars will be called to staging for their heat races. There will be no practice session for the Race of Champion Heat Races. All drivers will supply their own motors and tires for their heat races.

At the conclusion of the heats the top 12 in passing points will be called to pill draw for their motor and starting position on Saturday.

Approximately 15 to minutes after the completion of all of the other A Mains on Saturday, drivers and handlers will be called to the track to receive their motors and tires for the A Main.

Approximately 45 minutes to an hour after drivers receive their motors for the A main they will be called to the staging area for their practice session. Cars will be divided up into groups of 6 for their practice session. Each group will receive one two minute practice session prior to the start of the Race of Champions A main event.

Cars leaving their practice session must pull into the hot chute and then go directly back to the staging area. A ten minute break will be given after the conclusion of the last practice session. ALL CARS must remain in the staging area during this break in the action. TIRE SCRAPPERS AND GRINDERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED BETWEEN PRACTICE AND A MAIN RACES.

At the conclusion of the 15 minute break, all A main Race of Champions cars will be pushed of for their feature. A standard 1 minute warmup will be given before the start of the event.
