Novice Dad has questions

Hey guys I have a few questions about parts.  I just purchased a car for my son (5) and plan on taking him over to Columbus for the novice classes.  The car came with hardly any spares and I'm looking to keep costs down in the beginning.  My question is when it comes to gears is there a few I could purchase and get by.  The engine gear is currently a 32 and rear is a 26 I plan on doing the columbus trip and possibly joining either Whiteland or Kokomo.  I have a spare Front axle,tires and am ordering radius rods anything else I can't live without to start off.  Was wondering if I have to have kill switch on cage in order to do novice training.  Thanks for any input on this.

Ran novice there last year.  Off of memory, especially with this being your son's first time in the car, I think you'll be fine on gear.  But you can probably find some used ones for sale around the track if need.

 I also don't really think you need anything else, spare wise, that you don't already have for now.  If you did, you could pick it up there as there are 3 or 4 vendors at Columbus.  As time goes on, you'll realize the odds and ends you need, but I think you'll be able to get through the winter with what you have. 

The novice program at Columbus is great and I can attest after about 6 frustrating races in novice before going there last year, it does wonders.  Come spring time, my driver had figured it out! 

The most important thing is to get your driver comfortable in the car, speed, trick parts, spare pieces, etc will come later.

If you have the chance I would really look into Kokomo as a club to join. Great place with great people and the biggest advantage with rookie drivers is unlimited practice time. I would say during the summer months our rookie driver logged about 200-300 laps a day 6 days a week. Our driver loves to be in a race car and even running him 6 days a week we always had to hear him complain on day 7 about not being out there practicing.

it will be a while before you can find the right gear anyway. dont push. work on driver comfort and confidence. put a throttle stop first day. make the driver get used to holding the throttle all the way down, then increase a little at a time so that first time he's wide open he will not lift. good luck
