I will be attending .25 race on sat in columbus,oh in sept. to check out gen next racing action. I will be new to the sport in aug 2010 when my son joey will be able to start racing. any advice on what I should be looking for on race weekends? also would be interested in checking out the pits on how teams work on thier cars and equipment, is this allowed during the down time between racing action? looking forward to seeing the .25qm gen next action plus the midgets sat night at CMS.

I can't speak to that track specifically, but any track I have been to the pit area was open to spectators to walk around and check things out. Generally most of the people in the sport are very helpful so poke around and engage some of the handlers in conversation. Most will give you more information than you will know what to do with. Things I watched for when we went to the track for a few races before AJ started: Registration process Staging area/starting grid process Scale/Tech process Which cars were fast so I could seek out advice from those handlers. What most of the handlers took with them to the hot chute in case repairs were needed. General stuff like that... For tips on how to work on the car and stuff like that, there is a great novice guide on the Freeman site that really helps with a lot of the basic maintenance stuff you will need to know how to do: http://freemanracing.com/home/index.php/Download-document/7-Novice-Handbook-Writte-by-Steve-Clark.html

Joey, The Buckeye group is a great bunch of people who will do anything to help you out. Call or email Liz Compton and she will set you up with some people for the day. Liz Compton 614-761-9274 email - president@bqmra.comYou can put your son on the track as early as age 4.5. Ask her about Novice practice at the indoor winternationals - a spectacular setting to learn the sport!

You can work on the cars anywhere but on the track. When you find yourself mounting tires in a hotel room at 1 a.m. you will know you have the sickness.

That's usually for the Columbus Winter events, cause it's too darn cold to do it at the track!

then stick around for action on the 1/3-mile featuring
Mopar National and Ford Focus Midgets - 4pm -??? $15 per adult for a front gate ticket
Sunday, Sept 20 - Columbus Motor Speedway .25 Midgets - 8am - 3pm (again free of charge)
We encourage you stop by and speak with the families on their experience racing with the USAC .25 Midget series

Hey Joey, anytime you are able to be at the Buckeye QM track feel free to walk around and talk to anyone and everyone. I have a hard time thinking anyone would turn away an opportunity to peak someones interest in the sport- we've got a great group of folks always willing to aid the cause.
Come find me and I'll be happy to provide any info I possibly can. Look for the cute bald guy w/ the shaved head and beard. I've got a small 6x12 trlr (that is for sale "buy" the way) and usually have an American flag hanging off the back of it. We generally park in the area behind the turn 2 stands.
Look forward to talking with you. Tony.

Not really!
Boy talk about stacking the deck: two if the biggest guys in this part of the country racing QM's having to team up on one of the smallest. Hey Ssssmoke, you want to chime in too?
Next I bet your going to tell me size does matter, eh?
Better be careful or I will specifically sent Cole your way next race! He'll were you out!

Joey,
We might kid Tony about being shorter than us, but his love for the sport, his family and his country is larger than life.
See you in September.
