Post by: racn4fun on August 05, 2013, 05:31:59 PM
Lookin for some advice here. How do you talk to your driver, when they don't wanna listen to ANYTHING you have to say?? Its just a constant fight. Driver says they wanna drive, but yet its a headache for mom and dad anymore. What do we do???  HELLLLLPPPPPP!!!

Young kid just starting? Stick with it, things will click soon enough. It can be frustrating when it seems like they don't listen. They're learning alot and there's alot going on in the cars that most parents don't understand. My kid it seemed like forever, then one week she just started going and ain't slowed down since.

Biggest thing is RELAX. If this is a young driver then remember that all kids mature at different rates, some it takes a couple years before they get comfortable. I was told they are like switches.  Sometimes on sometimes off and sometimes flickering.  I have seen parents force the screaming kid to stay in the car, never good in my opinion.  If they don’t want to be in it that particular time then let them come back to it another day. You have sooo many races ahead of you one or two won’t kill anyone. Matter a fact I have seen parents park the car but bring the driver to watch their buddies race. Sooner or later they start to wish they were in having fun with them and start asking to race. Lean on your club members, your Prez, and rookie director for advice. They should be experienced members that have seen this many times in their own careers. Remember, if Moms not happy no one is happy, and in this sport it goes for all involved family members. I have also had pretty good results having other experienced handlers talk to my drivers,  (needs to be handlers that the kids seem to respect). Keep it FUN and it will come around,,,,,,
My 2 cents…..

Thanks for the words of wisdom!!  No, this isn't a new driver. We've been in it for 4 yrs now. A girl, no less...lol  She's just at that age too where she "knows everything"...to hell with what mom and dad have to say. It just gets VERY frustrating as a parent to talk and talk till you're blue in the face with this girl, and yet nothing "clicks" with her. She's a great driver! We just need to learn a little more on how to communicate with her better. I agree, CCR....maybe we just need to take a step back and take her to the races as a spectator and see how that goes. Sounds like a plan!!! :)

Ohhh, well now knowing that you’ve been in it for 4 years, that’s a different story. I also have a girl driver that has been driving for about 4 years so I can probably relate.
The best thing I’ve found is video taping. Video don’t lie. But don’t use as a tool against the driver just let them study it and take it in on their own. Point something out then leave it alone. Also point out the good things. More often than not, video proves us handlers wrong. Also with experienced drivers having respected handlers give pointers ALONE without you being there really works to.
I was lucky enough to be practicing one day and had a very well respected handler walk on the track and point out the proper marks in the apex,(after me telling them till I was blue for weeks).
Guess what happened after. Didn’t have to tell them again, other than occasional reminder.  Keep it fun and time will take care of the rest..
Good luck

Im also in about the same place as you. Our 4th year as well and my driver is the same way. Although I have seen some recent improvements. I couldnt agree with ccr's advise more. Especially where another experienced, respected handler points things out to them and gives advice. So funny how they preach back what I have been saying all along only after someone else tells them. I also found this to be true with baseball, basketball and anything else I try to tell my kid. lol. Good luck and stick with it.

Guess what -- Another -- same -- 4-5 yrs.  14 yr old no less.... I went from all knowing to a complete embarassment.  Was at a track this past week and no matter what I said it didnt matter.  Kept running that line -- wrong one of course.  Then someone helped... pointed things out -- same as I have been saying...... started last -- finished 5th.  I praised her, talked about what could be improved and was promtly ignored.... Told mom she felt good.... but I was basically non -existent.

She is much faster- Much faster -- but still feels nothing I say is of value.  So I just work on things - ask questions, be supportive.
I see improvement every time on the track.  I was one of those competitive guys that always played sports and never lost.... so its hard for me to stand back and let her take her lumps.... but its what I must do.

Advice from other respected handlers usually helps.

Would also highly recommend changing tactics. Instead of telling driver what to do, ask them questions to help them think through their minds.  Stubborn minds usually realize that they need to do something different to get better results.
Examples:
What line worked best today?
We're you on the same line as the winner?
What changes do you want on the car?  If not specific, don't change.
If you could redo that race what should handler do differently?  What would you do differently?

If they are so smart, get them to do all the thinking. You may end up with a driver that communicates better to you.
