Speedway, Indiana (September 14, 2020).........What’s new in the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship?  Well, for starters, Brady Bacon lost the point lead following the first race of last weekend, then gained it back by the end of the weekend as the series enters a pair of races this Friday, Sept. 18 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track and Saturday, Sept. 19 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

The Broken Arrow, Okla. driver also took over as the winningest driver in the series with his fifth victory of the 2020 season at Lincoln Park in Putnamville, Ind., as did his team, Dynamics, Inc., who moved to the top in both of the respective categories as they seek their 12th series owner’s crown while Bacon aims for a third driver title.

Jadon Rogers of Worthington, Ind. stringed together a successful weekend, including a 9th at Lincoln Park, to overtake Anton Hernandez of Arlington, Texas for the lead for the in the series’ Rookie standings.

Bacon, meanwhile, elevated his laps led count to 126 with 15 more added at Lincoln Park last Saturday.  Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) has moved into a tie with Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) who now each 14 top-fives in 22 starts this season.  A three-way tie has locked up Bacon, Windom and Chase Stockon (Fort Branch, Ind.) for the most top-ten feature finishes in 2020 with 19 apiece.

C.J. Leary became the first driver to reach five fast qualifying times this year with the series at Lincoln Park.  Leary, Stockon and Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) are knotted up with six heat race victories apiece this season.  Furthermore, just six drivers have managed to start all 22 feature events this year: Bacon, Grant, Leary, Stockon, Windom and Kevin Thomas Jr., (Cullman, Ala.).

The biggest charger of the season entering last weekend’s three events was Shane Cottle (Kansas, Ill.), who had advanced from 21st to 7th on July 24 at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway.  Last Saturday, Cottle equaled that charge with a run from 17th to 3rd in the second main event of the night at Lincoln Park Speedway.

The event honors the late, great Jim Hurtubise, the 1993 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee, who achieved what is nearly impossible, winning five consecutive USAC National Sprint Car feature events at Terre Haute between 1960 and 1962.  Hurtubise, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., stood the racing world on its ears in 1960 when he flirted with the 150 mph barrier at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was that year’s Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year.

National Championship wins for Hurtubise came at Sacramento, Calif., Langhorne, Pa. and Springfield, Ill. (twice), before suffering serious burns in an accident at Milwaukee, Wisc. in 1964.  He was the last driver to wheel a front-engined car in the Indianapolis 500 in 1968.  A spectacular Sprint Car racer, he won 14 USAC features, and was also an accomplished stock car veteran.  He won the 1966 Atlanta 500 NASCAR race.

Pits open for Friday’s Jim Hurtubise Classic at 3pm Eastern with grandstands opening at 4pm, the drivers meeting at 6pm and hot laps at 6:30pm.

Adult grandstand tickets are $25 while adult infield tickets are $15.  Kids 11 and under are free when accompanied by a parent.  Pit passes are $30 for members, $35 for non-members.

You can watch Friday Hurtubise Classic LIVE on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/3frPoW6.
